Headteacher Faces Court Case Over Alleged Assault on Pupil

A headteacher of a government primary school in Chuadanga has been named in a court case over allegations that she physically assaulted a young pupil during a school assembly, adding a new dimension to an incident that has already attracted widespread public attention across Bangladesh.

The case has been filed against Kaberi Karim, headteacher of Farmpara Government Primary School, following allegations that she slapped and pushed a child during the school’s morning assembly on 8 July. The controversy had already escalated after the child’s father was separately accused of assaulting the headteacher in the school’s office later the same day.

According to the complaint submitted to the Chuadanga Judicial Magistrate’s Court, the incident began when the pupil reportedly became unwell during the morning assembly due to the intense heat. The complaint states that the child was standing with both hands covering his ears when the headteacher allegedly became angry, pulled him out of the line, slapped him on both cheeks and pushed him to the ground. It further alleges that the child was later taken to the headteacher’s office, where he was physically assaulted again before being rescued by his parents and local residents after they arrived at the school.

The case was filed by the child’s maternal grandfather, Abdul Rashid. According to the complainant, the family sought to lodge a case with the local police station immediately after the incident but claimed that the police did not accept the complaint, prompting them to seek legal remedy through the court instead.

The complaint also alleges that the child’s father, Shamsur Rahman Shuvo, has been subjected to death threats and has effectively been kept in hiding following the incident. These allegations have been included in the court filing, although they remain subject to legal examination.

The confrontation did not end with the alleged assault on the pupil. After learning about what had allegedly happened to their child, the boy’s parents visited the school to question the headteacher. During the ensuing discussion in the headteacher’s office, an argument reportedly escalated into a physical altercation in which the child’s father allegedly slapped the headteacher.

Footage of that confrontation was captured by the school’s CCTV cameras and later circulated widely on social media, drawing significant public attention and sparking debate over discipline in schools, parental conduct and the responsibilities of educational institutions.

Following the incident, the headteacher filed a separate criminal case against the child’s parents. In that case, the father, Shamsur Rahman Shuvo, has been named as the principal accused. Police have yet to arrest him, and there has been no confirmed information indicating that he has surrendered before the court.

The child’s mother, Mitali, was arrested in connection with the headteacher’s case shortly after the incident. She was produced before a court the following day and was subsequently granted bail.

In the headteacher’s case, the accused face allegations including causing physical injuries, outraging modesty and obstructing a public servant from carrying out official duties.

The two cases are now proceeding through separate legal channels, with each side presenting conflicting accounts of the events. The court will determine the next course of action after examining the allegations, available evidence and witness testimony. The incident has also renewed discussion about appropriate disciplinary practices in educational institutions and the importance of resolving disputes involving children through lawful and transparent procedures.
