NCP Leader Arrested with Yaba Tablets in Gaibandha’s Sundarganj

Police have arrested a local leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Sundarganj Upazila, Gaibandha, after recovering contraband Yaba tablets from his possession.

The suspect has been identified as 26-year-old Shakil Mia, also known as Shakil Khan, son of Md Noor Mohammad Ali, hailing from West Sicha (Hajipara) village under Chandipur Union. Shakil held the portfolio of Assistant Organisational Secretary within the Sundarganj Upazila unit of the NCP.

According to police sources, the operation took place late on Sunday night, 19 July, at around 12:45 am. Acting on a covert tip-off, a team from the Kanchibari Police Investigation Centre conducted a targeted anti-narcotics drive in the Dharmapur Market area of Sreepur Union.

Officers had received specific intelligence indicating that an illicit narcotics transaction was actively taking place in an open space adjacent to the cash counter of the Zobeda Filling Station at Dharmapur Market. Upon the arrival of the police unit at the scene, Shakil attempted to flee. However, officers swiftly intercepted him. A subsequent search led to the recovery of eight pieces of Yaba tablets, wrapped in white polythene, from the pocket of his trousers.

Following the seizure, Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Nausher Ali filed a formal case against the suspect at Sundarganj Police Station under the Narcotics Control Act.

Providing further confirmation of the legal proceedings, Inspector Md Selim Reza, In-Charge of the Kanchibari Police Investigation Centre, stated that the operation was part of an ongoing crackdown against illegal drugs. He confirmed that eight Yaba pills were seized from Shakil’s possession and that the accused has since been remanded to judicial custody via the court system.

In response to the arrest, the local leadership of the National Citizen Party acted swiftly to distance the organisation from the accused. Md Ashanur Rahman, Member Secretary of the Sundarganj Upazila NCP unit, emphasised the party’s zero-tolerance policy towards illegal activity, stating that a drug peddler cannot hold membership in any political organisation regardless of their identity. He added that the law must take its course and confirmed that Shakil was immediately expelled from the Upazila Convenor Committee following the incident.

Echoing this stance, Md Al Shahadat Zaman Ziko, Convenor of the Sundarganj Upazila NCP, affirmed that the decision to expel Shakil was finalized promptly after law enforcement authorities formally notified the party of his arrest and involvement in the narcotics incident.
