A sensitive video involving Gazi Nazrul Islam, a Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami politician representing the Satkhira-4 (Shyamnagar) constituency, has sparked significant political intrigue and public debate across Bangladesh after being widely shared across digital platforms.

The footage, which began circulating on social media late on Monday evening (20th July), shows the politician in a private setting with a woman. Within hours of its appearance, various edited segments of the recording were disseminated across online network groups and messaging channels, eliciting sharp reactions from political observers and the public alike.

Contradictory Responses: From Deepfake Claims to Acknowledgment

The initial response from regional party communications pointed towards digital tampering. Crime Barta, a news outlet run by the media cell of the Satkhira district Jamaat-e-Islami, issued a preliminary statement asserting that the footage was a sophisticated deepfake generated through Artificial Intelligence (AI) to tarnish the reputation of the local leader.

Direct attempts to reach Gazi Nazrul Islam via telephone for comment yielded no immediate response.

However, a subsequent official clarification provided by the district leadership offered a markedly different perspective. Addressing media enquiries, Maulana Azizur Rahman, Secretary and Media Chief of Satkhira District Jamaat-e-Islami, clarified the situation on behalf of the politician.

“We are aware of the footage circulating online,” Maulana Azizur Rahman affirmed. “The MP has clarified to us that the woman seen alongside him in the video is his lawfully wedded second wife. This union was conducted with the full knowledge and consent of his first wife. Our priority now is to ascertain how this private recording entered the public domain.”

When pressed for details regarding the date of the wedding, the party secretary noted that whilst he lacked the exact date of the ceremony, he had been informed that the marriage was solemnised some time ago.

Under the framework of Bangladeshi civil law, specifically governed by the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance of 1961, polygyny is permissible subject to statutory conditions. A husband must obtain written permission from the local Arbitration Council, alongside demonstrating that the consent of the current wife has been granted, to ensure the validity of a subsequent marriage.

This incident also highlights the complexities of managing digital controversies in contemporary politics. The swift initial claim of AI manipulation, followed by a factual admission of a second marriage, underscores the growing reliance on deepfake defense strategies during sudden public relations crises involving video evidence.
