Three Dead as Lorry Collides with Auto-Rickshaw in Mymensingh

A tragic collision between a heavy goods vehicle and a battery-operated auto-rickshaw has claimed three lives, including two women, in Mymensingh. The fatal accident occurred at around 11:30 am on Tuesday near a lorry depot adjacent to the Shambhuganj Rural Electrification office on the Mymensingh-Kishoreganj highway, leaving two others injured.

The deceased have been identified as 35-year-old Debraj Ghosh, son of Dilip Ghosh from the Jubilee Ghat area of Mymensingh city; 25-year-old Sheela, daughter of Abdul Motaleb from Dadra village in Tarakanda upazila; and 35-year-old Abeda, wife of Rafiqul Islam from Shambhuganj Majhipara.

According to police and eyewitness accounts, the passenger-carrying battery-operated auto-rickshaw was heading towards Kishoreganj from Shambhuganj. As the vehicle reached the front of the local lorry depot, a lorry emerging suddenly onto the main road struck the auto-rickshaw with considerable force. The impact crushed the smaller three-wheeler, causing immediate casualties.

Debraj Ghosh died at the scene from severe trauma. The collision also left three female passengers and the auto-rickshaw driver injured. Local residents rushed to the spot, rescuing the casualties and arranging their immediate transport to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Upon arrival, attending physicians pronounced Sheela and Abeda dead.

One injured woman remains admitted to the hospital in critical condition, receiving emergency treatment. Meanwhile, the auto-rickshaw driver, who sustained minor injuries, absconded from the hospital premises after receiving initial first aid.

Confirming the casualties, Sub-Inspector Khalid of Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station stated that police recovered Debraj Ghosh’s body directly from the accident venue, while the bodies of the two women were placed in the hospital mortuary for necessary procedures. Law enforcement officers are investigating the incident, and formal legal action regarding the fatal collision is currently underway.
