Woman Allegedly Elopes with Nephew, Taking Cash and Gold

A housewife has allegedly left her home in Mymensingh’s Ishwarganj with a neighbouring young man, who is described by the complainant as his nephew by relation, taking cash and gold jewellery with her.

The incident reportedly took place in Brindasthan village under Rajibpur Union of Ishwarganj upazila. On Tuesday (21 July), the woman’s husband, Manindra Chandra Dey, submitted a written complaint to Ishwarganj Police Station, alleging that his wife, Jharna Rani, had left with Rudra Chandra Dey, a neighbour.

According to Manindra, he and Jharna had been married for seven years and have a six-year-old son. He said he had been working away from home for a prolonged period as an employee at a hotel to support the family. During his absence, he alleged, his wife developed a close relationship with Rudra.

Manindra claimed that Jharna left their home with Rudra on 1 July. He further alleged that she took around two bhori of gold jewellery and Tk45,000 in cash when she left.

He said he had previously become aware of the alleged relationship and had warned his wife. He also claimed that he had informed Rudra’s family about the matter in an attempt to prevent the situation from escalating.

The allegations, however, have been disputed in part by Rudra’s family. They reportedly said that a romantic relationship had developed between Rudra and Jharna through mobile phone communication. The family also claimed that they had been told Jharna had divorced her husband before leaving with Rudra.

No documentary evidence confirming such a divorce has been found, according to the information available in connection with the complaint. The circumstances surrounding the woman’s departure, including the allegations concerning the jewellery and cash, remain subject to investigation.

The case has drawn attention to a complicated domestic dispute involving allegations of an extramarital relationship, a missing spouse and claims over personal property. Such disputes can become legally sensitive when allegations of theft, marital status or the whereabouts of an adult family member are involved. The facts of the case will therefore depend on evidence gathered during the police investigation.

Officer-in-Charge of Ishwarganj Police Station Robiul Azam confirmed that a written complaint had been received. He said police would investigate the allegations and take legal action based on the findings.

The police investigation is expected to establish the circumstances in which Jharna left the family home, whether she left voluntarily, and whether the allegations regarding the cash and gold jewellery can be substantiated. Until the investigation is completed, the claims made by the parties involved remain allegations.
