Local residents in Fatikchhari, Chattogram, have handed over a local Jubo League female leader and her alleged partner to law enforcement authorities following allegations of an extramarital affair and anti-social activities. Following preliminary police procedures, both individuals were subsequently forwarded to the judicial court.
The incident occurred during the late hours of Wednesday, 22 July, at approximately 1:00 am in the Rubber Dam Dalu Aralia locality, situated in Ward No. 6 of Bhujpur Union within the newly constituted Fatikchhari North Upazila.
Police records identify the detained woman as Rashu Begum, 40, a female member of the convening committee of the banned Awami Jubo League in Fatikchhari North Upazila. She is the wife of an expatriate living abroad. The second individual involved was identified as Md. Hasem, 45, son of Bacha Mia, residing in the Kotbaria Nazirkhil area under the same union.
Local sources indicate that neighbourhood residents grew suspicious when Hasem visited Rashu Begum’s residence late on Wednesday night. Acting upon allegations of inappropriate conduct, local citizens detained both individuals at the premises before contacting the authorities at Bhujpur Police Station.
Commenting on the matter, Ekramul Haq Ekram, General Secretary of the Bhujpur Police Station Jubodal unit, strongly condemned the alleged actions, stating that such behaviour undermines community standards.
Addressing the incident, local Union Parishad member Md. Sohel Munshi noted that complaints regarding Rashu Begum’s conduct had been circulating within the locality for a considerable period. He mentioned that community representatives had issued prior warnings regarding these matters, which went unheeded. The situation escalated when residents personally intervened on Wednesday night, detaining the pair before handing them over to law enforcement.
Bipul Chandra Dey, Officer-in-Charge of Bhujpur Police Station, confirmed the sequence of events. He stated that officers took custody of both individuals after being summoned by local residents. Following the completion of required statutory procedures and formal documentation, the suspects were dispatched to the court for further legal proceedings.
