Man Arrested in Ghatail Following Alleged Sexual Assault of Child

Police in Ghatail, Tangail, have arrested a 52-year-old man in connection with the alleged sexual assault of an eight-year-old girl. The suspect, identified as Chhanowar Hossain Talukder, son of Khorshed Alam from Shaliyabah village in the Rasulpur Union of Ghatail Upazila, was taken into custody following a formal complaint lodged by the victim’s mother.

The formal case was registered at Ghatail Police Station on Tuesday, 21 July, after the victim’s family approached the authorities.

According to the details outlined in the police complaint, the incident occurred on the evening of 5 July at approximately 8:30 pm. The victim’s mother had sent the young girl to a nearby local shop to purchase mosquito coils. Whilst returning home, the suspect intercepted the child, muffled her voice, and forcibly dragged her into a nearby mango orchard where the alleged assault took place. The child subsequently managed to return home in a severely injured and bleeding state.

The victim’s mother revealed that the family was initially prevented from seeking immediate legal recourse due to severe intimidation. She stated that the suspect, leveraging his influential standing in the local area, threatened to evict the family from the village if they disclosed the incident to anyone. Fearing for their safety, the frightened family delayed reporting the crime. The mother further alleged that the suspect had previously subjected her daughter to molestation, an incident that had gone unreported due to similar intimidation.

Speaking to our representative, Officer-in-Charge of Ghatail Police Station, Mokshedur Rahman, confirmed the arrest of the suspect. He stated that law enforcement officers acted swiftly upon receiving the formal complaint from the child’s mother. The victim was sent for mandatory medical examinations as part of the legal and forensic protocol. Police officials assured that a thorough investigation is underway to gather necessary evidence and ensure appropriate legal action is pursued through the judicial system.
