Three British Bangladeshis Die in Essex Sea Tragedy

A family outing to the seaside ended in heartbreak after three members of a British Bangladeshi family, including a mother and her teenage daughter, drowned after being swept away by a powerful incoming tide at a beach in Essex, eastern England.

The victims have been identified as 42-year-old Selina Rahman, her 15-year-old daughter Samia Rahman, and nine-year-old Musa Ahmed, the son of Selina’s sister. Selina was the wife of Sheikh Mansur Rahman, Vice-President of the UK Jubo Dal. The family traces its roots to Mollargaon Union in South Surma Upazila of Sylhet, Bangladesh.

According to Sheikh Mahfuzur Rahman Munna, the brother of Sheikh Mansur Rahman, the tragic incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon while the family was visiting West Mersea Beach near Colchester in Essex. The outing took a devastating turn when the tide rose rapidly and young Musa was caught in a strong current.

In an attempt to save the child, Selina Rahman entered the water. Her daughter, Samia, also went into the sea to help her mother. Within moments, all three were overwhelmed by the force of the current and disappeared beneath the water. Despite desperate rescue efforts, none of them could be saved.

Emergency services responded swiftly after receiving reports of the incident. Local police officers, lifeboat crews, a Coastguard rescue helicopter and an air ambulance were deployed to the scene as part of a large-scale search and rescue operation. The three victims were eventually recovered from the water but were later pronounced dead.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the British Bangladeshi community, particularly among those who knew the family. Relatives described the incident as a devastating and unforeseen loss, with many expressing their grief and offering condolences to the bereaved family.

Family members said no final decision has yet been made regarding the funeral arrangements. Discussions are still ongoing over whether the bodies will be repatriated to Bangladesh for burial or laid to rest in the United Kingdom.
