Three Shot in Gunfire Incident in Dhaka’s Mirpur

Three people, including a youth wing political leader, were reportedly injured in a shooting in Mirpur-13 in the capital on Friday night, prompting concern among local residents. The incident took place at around 11.30pm in the Kafrul area.

The injured have been identified as Yusuf Ali, 45, Nalam Sardar, 45, and Monir Hossain, 32. They were taken to hospital for treatment after sustaining gunshot wounds. Their current condition was not immediately available.

Local residents also detained a man allegedly carrying a firearm following the shooting and handed him over to police. His identity was not immediately known, and details about whether any weapon was recovered from him were not available at the time of reporting.

Mohammad Sujon, a resident of Mirpur-13 and a BNP activist, said that he and seven or eight others, including Jubo Dal leader Hafizur Rahman, were spending time together in the area at about 11.30pm. According to his account, three armed men suddenly opened fire indiscriminately, apparently targeting the group.

Sujon claimed that Hafizur Rahman, member secretary of the Kafrul thana unit of Jubo Dal, was hit by two bullets. He also said that BNP leader Yusuf Ali sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remained unclear. It was not immediately known what triggered the attack, whether the assailants had specifically targeted any individual, or whether the incident was linked to an existing dispute. Police had yet to provide details about the identities of the alleged attackers or establish a possible motive.

Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Kafrul Police Station, confirmed that a shooting had taken place in the area. He said two people had been injured by gunfire and were rescued and taken to hospital for medical treatment.

The police statement and accounts from local residents differed over the number of people injured. While residents reported that three people had been shot, the officer initially confirmed injuries to two individuals. Further information was expected to emerge as police investigated the incident and verified the identities and medical condition of those involved.

The reported detention of a suspected armed man by local residents adds another dimension to the investigation. Police are expected to question the detained individual and examine whether he had any connection with the shooting. The identities of the other alleged attackers, however, remained unknown at the time of reporting.

The incident has raised fresh concerns among residents about public safety in a densely populated part of the capital. Gunfire late at night in a residential area can quickly create panic, particularly when the circumstances behind the incident are not immediately clear.

Authorities will now need to establish the sequence of events, determine who was responsible and identify the motive behind the shooting. A fuller account of the incident is likely to emerge as the investigation progresses and police gather statements from witnesses and those involved.
