Nearly 1,500 Ammunition Rounds Discovered in Chattogram Drain

Police have recovered a cache of nearly 1,500 live ammunition rounds dumped inside a sack in a drain in the Shershah Bangla Bazar area under Bayezid Bostami Police Station in Chattogram.

The recovery was made around 2:00 pm on Saturday, 25 July, from a roadside drain adjacent to Gate No. 5 of the BSRM factory. The seized arsenal includes roughly 120 large-calibre bullets alongside more than 1,200 smaller rounds.

The discovery unfolded when sanitation workers from the Chattogram City Corporation were carrying out routine cleaning operations in the drainage system. Whilst clearing debris and sludge, the workers spotted a heavy, suspicious sack submerged in the water. Upon retrieving and opening the bag, they discovered rows of live ammunition packed together and immediately notified local authorities.

A police unit from Bayezid Bostami Police Station dispatched officers to secure the location and seize the consignment. Preliminary examinations suggest that the 120 larger rounds are high-calibre cartridges typically chambered for automatic rifles such as the AK-47. However, senior officers confirmed that forensic and ballistic experts will inspect the entire batch to establish the precise calibres, manufacturing origins, and potential age of the ordnance.

Confirming the incident, Inspector (Investigation) Mohammad Mostafa Kamal of Bayezid Bostami Police Station stated that officers took custody of the sack shortly after being alerted by the cleaners. He noted that the police count recorded 120 heavy-calibre rounds alongside over 1,200 smaller bullets.

Investigators have opened an inquiry to determine who abandoned the high-capacity ammunition cache in a public waterway and for what purpose it was stored. Law enforcement agencies are currently scanning surrounding CCTV footage and gathering local intelligence to trace suspects associated with the illegal stash. Further legal proceedings and forensic assessments are underway.
