Gunfire Erupts as Attackers Shoot at Police in Ashulia

Gunmen opened fire at police in Ashulia of Savar on Saturday afternoon before fleeing the scene, triggering a brief exchange of gunfire but leaving no immediate reports of casualties.

The incident took place at around midday on Saturday, 25 July, on the fifth floor of Sharif Market in the Jamgora area of Ashulia. Police said they had gone to the location after receiving information that a group of criminals had allegedly held a man hostage.

According to police, officers reached the market after being alerted to the alleged hostage situation. As soon as the attackers became aware of the police presence, they opened fire towards the law enforcement team. Police responded by returning fire in an attempt to protect themselves and bring the situation under control.

The attackers, however, managed to escape from the area during the exchange. Police were unable to arrest any of the suspects immediately after the incident.

Sub-Inspector Rasheduzzaman of Ashulia Police Station confirmed the incident, saying the police team had gone to Sharif Market after receiving information that a man was being held hostage by criminals. The suspects reportedly fired seven to eight rounds at the police before fleeing the scene.

Police said no one was reported injured or killed in the incident at the time of filing the report. However, the circumstances surrounding the alleged hostage-taking and the identity and whereabouts of the attackers remained unclear.

Law enforcement personnel have continued efforts to identify and apprehend those involved. Police are also expected to investigate the circumstances that led to the alleged hostage situation and the subsequent exchange of gunfire.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about criminal activity in parts of Ashulia, an industrially important area on the outskirts of Dhaka where large numbers of people live and work. Any armed confrontation involving criminals and law enforcement can create risks for residents, workers and others in densely populated commercial areas.
