Cricket match outcomes are traditionally evaluated through individual statistical achievements—the tally of runs scored, wickets taken, or catches held. However, the Indian national team management has introduced a novel recognition scheme designed to honour contributions that often escape the official scorecard. During India’s tour of Zimbabwe, interim head coach VVS Laxman unveiled the ‘Best Attitude Award’ within the team dressing room to reward work ethic, mental fortitude, and discipline over raw numbers.
The initiative acknowledges the unheralded actions that influence team dynamics, such as relentless boundary fielding, tactical adaptability, and unyielding dedication during training sessions. Laxman envisaged the award as a mechanism to highlight the intangible qualities that underpin sustained collective success in international sport.
Young top-order batter Tilak Varma became the inaugural recipient of the award following the opening fixture of the series. On paper, Varma recorded a modest outing—securing a single catch, striking one boundary, and scoring the winning run. Whilst these numbers appear routine, the coaching staff selected Varma for his exceptional off-field preparation, sharp focus, and exemplary conduct throughout the match setup.
Explaining the rationale behind the accolade, Laxman emphasised that a player’s mindset is every bit as critical as technical skill. The former Indian international stated that the team management resolved not to limit player evaluations strictly to batting, bowling, or fielding metrics across the series. Instead, fostering a positive environment and rewarding professional standards has been elevated to an equal priority.
To maintain impartiality, the selection process rests entirely with the support staff rather than the senior coaching hierarchy. For the ongoing series, strength and conditioning coach Harsha, alongside performance coach Soham, have been tasked with monitoring squad members during both practice sessions and live match situations.
Commending Varma’s commitment, Harsha observed that the young cricketer demonstrated rigorous preparation well before stepping onto the pitch. The conditioning coach noted that Varma approached every drill with intensity and focus, even during moments when maximum physical exertion was not strictly demanded.
Upon receiving the award, Varma expressed gratitude, stating that he consistently strives to give his utmost for the squad. He added that his habits outside the boundary rope directly enhance his resilience and performance in high-pressure match situations. The introduction of this internal honour marks a deliberate shift in team culture, placing holistic professionalism on equal footing with statistical brilliance.
