An altercation over train carriage access escalated into violence at Kushtia Court Railway Station on Saturday afternoon, leaving a father and son injured with knife wounds and causing a two-hour rail blockage.
The incident unfolded aboard the Dhaka-bound Sundarban Express when a train conductor guard, identified as Abdullah Al Mamun, allegedly drew a sharp weapon and attacked the passengers during an argument over seating arrangements. Sensing mounting fury from gathered crowds, the entire operating crew abandoned the locomotive, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded until civil administrators and police restored order.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 pm on Saturday, 25 July, when the Sundarban Express pulled into Kushtia Court Railway Station. Among the waiting passengers were 60-year-old Abdur Rahim, his wife, and their 40-year-old son, Shafiul Awal Suman, all residents of neighbouring Chuadanga district.
Due to the significant height difference between the station platform and the carriage footboards, the family struggled to board their designated compartment in time. Fearing the train would depart, they boarded an adjacent air-conditioned carriage instead.
According to eye-witnesses, conductor guard Abdullah Al Mamun confronted the family immediately for entering the air-conditioned compartment without corresponding tickets. The interaction deteriorated rapidly into a heated verbal exchange. During the dispute, Mamun reportedly pushed Abdur Rahim’s ailing wife, causing her to fall to the floor. When her husband and son intervened to protect her, Mamun produced a sharp knife and slashed both men across their hands.
Shafiul Awal Suman, Injured Passenger: “My sick mother and father were trying to board the train to travel to Chuadanga when a staff member blocked us. At one point, he pushed my mother, making her tumble down. When we argued inside the compartment, he pulled out a knife and stabbed my father and me. Our hands were cut as we tried to defend ourselves.”
Local residents and fellow passengers rushed to the aid of the injured men, escorting them to the Kushtia 250-Bed General Hospital for emergency treatment.
Dr Iqbal Hasan, the hospital’s Resident Medical Officer (RMO), confirmed that both victims received multiple stitches on their hands before being discharged with necessary prescriptions.
News of the stabbing spread rapidly across the platform, provoking outrage among onlookers and fellow commuters. Angry crowds blocked the tracks and staged a protest surrounding the Sundarban Express, demanding immediate accountability. Realising the volatile nature of the demonstration, the locomotive master, the train director, and attending railway staff fled the station compound to evade the crowd’s wrath.
The blockade halted train movement along the regional network, leaving several passenger services disrupted. Upon receiving reports of the standoff, Kushtia Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Harun Or Rashid and Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Pronob Kumar Sarkar arrived at the scene with reinforced police contingents.
The senior officials engaged directly with the demonstrators, guaranteeing that a fair investigation would be launched to hold the culprit accountable. Following these assurances, the protesters lifted the blockade after roughly two hours, enabling the crew to return and resume train operations.
Kushtia Court Railway Station In-Charge Iti Khatun confirmed the identity of the accused employee as Abdullah Al Mamun, who serves as a conductor guard for Bangladesh Railway.
Additional Superintendent of Police Pronob Kumar Sarkar assured reporters that legal steps will follow the official probe. However, Officer-in-Charge of Kushtia Model Police Station, Kabir Hossain Matubbar, noted that neither local police nor the Poradaha Railway Police Station had received a formal written complaint (ejahar) from the victimised family by late Saturday evening.
