Remembering Kantakavi Rajanikanta Sen: Legendary Bard of Bengali Patriotism

In the rich tapestry of Bengali music and literature, few creators have struck as profound a chord with the collective conscience of the region as Kantakavi Rajanikanta Sen. Whilst his musical repertoire may not match the sheer volume of his illustrious contemporaries—such as the Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore, Dwijendralal Ray, or Atulprasad Sen—the unpretentious simplicity, emotional resonance, deeply spiritual undertones, and fervent nationalism of his work have firmly established his enduring legacy.

Born on 26 July 1865 in the historic village of Bhangabari, situated in the Sirajganj district of present-day Bangladesh, Rajanikanta was raised in an intellectually refined atmosphere. His father, Guruprasad Sen, served as a sub-judge (a legal officer historically known as a munsif) and was himself a published poet. His mother, Manomohini Devi, was a devout and culturally inclined matriarch. This household environment significantly influenced Rajanikanta’s early inclination towards artistic expression.

From a young age, his heart gravitated far more towards music and melody than standard academic pursuits. He honed his skills as an accomplished flautist during his youth, drawing immense inspiration and guidance from his close friend and mentor, Tarakeshwar Chakraborty, an exceptional vocalist of the era. Nevertheless, Rajanikanta pursued higher education, earning a undergraduate degree from City College in Kolkata, followed by a professional qualification in law. He subsequently commenced his legal practice in Rajshahi.

Despite his legal career, literature and composition remained his true life’s calling. He was a prominent figure at cultural gatherings and literary assemblies, routinely enchanting audiences with his poetry recitals and soulful vocal performances.

His literary journey gained formal momentum in 1902 with the publication of his debut poetry anthology, Bani. This was followed by Kalyani and Amrita. In total, three of his works were published during his lifetime, whilst another five volumes were brought out posthumously. His artistic output encompasses approximately three hundred songs spanning devotional melodies, humorous verses, and patriotic anthems.

Rajanikanta played a pivotal role during the anti-Partition of Bengal movement in 1905. As the Swadeshi movement surged, encouraging the boycott of foreign goods in favour of indigenous products, Rajanikanta composed his immortal patriotic anthem:

“Mayer dewa mota kapor mathay tule ne re bhai…”

(“Embrace with reverence the coarse cloth gifted by our Motherland, my brothers…”)

The song spread rapidly across households in Bengal, serving as an invigorating rallying cry for national self-respect, unity, and anti-colonial resistance. His devotional compositions similarly reflected a profound sense of surrender to the Divine, earning him widespread admiration.

Tragically, during the twilight of his life, Rajanikanta was struck by laryngeal cancer. Despite suffering excruciating physical torment and losing his ability to speak clearly, his spiritual fortitude and creative fervor remained unshaken. During his hospitalisation, Rabindranath Tagore visited him—a poignant encounter that remains a cherished chapter in Bengali literary history.

On 13 September 1910, at the tender age of forty-five, Rajanikanta Sen passed away. More than a century later, his immortal creations continue to inspire generations through their message of devotion, patriotism, and human dignity.
