Lionel Messi Withdrawn From MLS All-Star Game to Rest

Lionel Messi will miss the upcoming Major League Soccer (MLS) All-Star match as he takes a period of extended rest, league officials confirmed on Saturday, 26 July. The showcase fixture is scheduled to take place this coming Wednesday in Charlotte, North Carolina, featuring a marquee showdown between the finest talents of MLS and a marquee selection from Mexico’s Liga MX.

The Inter Miami star is one of four notable players pulled from the All-Star roster. Joining Messi on the sidelines are his Argentine compatriot and Inter Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul, former Chicago Fire forward Hugo Cuypers, and Chicago Fire defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi.

The decision to exclude both Messi and De Paul stems from their intensive workload during Argentina’s recent World Cup campaign. Having endured a demanding tournament schedule, both players have been granted time off to recuperate before resuming their domestic league duties.

Meanwhile, squad adjustments for the remaining two players were necessitated by transfer activity and injury. Belgic striker Hugo Cuypers recently completed a move from Chicago Fire to Mexican side CF Monterrey, rendering him ineligible to represent the MLS side. South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi was forced out after sustaining a lower-body injury.

To replace the outgoing quartet, MLS management has summoned four replacements to bolster the All-Star squad: Inter Miami midfielder Yannick Bright, Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Andrés Cubas, Houston Dynamo forward Guilherme, and Chicago Fire attacker Philip Zinckernagel.

The replacement players enter the squad in impressive form. Inter Miami have enjoyed considerable success with Yannick Bright in their starting lineup this season, recording nine wins, two draws, and just one defeat across his 12 starts. Andrés Cubas has proved equally effective in midfield, contributing three assists over his 12 appearances for Vancouver. In his debut season with Houston Dynamo, Guilherme has delivered an impactful output with eight goals and five assists, whilst Zinckernagel has registered five goals and seven assists for Chicago Fire.

Although the absence of world-class marquee attractions like Messi temporarily dims the star power of the event, enthusiasm remains high for the cross-border rivalry between MLS and Liga MX.
