BGB Foils Border Smuggling Operation in Khagrachhari, Seizing Arms

Personnel from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) engaged in a fierce gunfight with armed smugglers near the Yamini Para border area in Matiranga upazila, Khagrachhari, successfully seizing a stash of firearms and ammunition. The clash occurred in the early hours of Monday following a targeted anti-smuggling drive along the sensitive frontier separating Bangladesh and India.

According to an official press release issued by the Yamini Para Zone of the BGB on Monday afternoon, a specialised patrol team from the Yamini Para Battalion (23 BGB) conducted the operation at around 3:10 am. Acting on precise intelligence, the border forces launched a sweep in the Singhapara village area of Tabalchhari Union, situated adjacent to the international border.

Upon detecting the presence of a smuggling syndicate attempting to move illicit goods across the line of control, the BGB patrol closed in and pursued the suspects. The smugglers fled into the dense terrain under the cover of darkness, leaving behind a significant cache of weaponry. A subsequent search of the site led to the recovery of two foreign-manufactured pistols, two locally made handguns, 14 rounds of live ammunition, and various pieces of operational gear.

The situation escalated dramatically as the BGB patrol team began withdrawing towards their Border Outpost (BOP) with the confiscated items. In an attempt to retrieve the seized contraband, the armed miscreants ambushed the troops, opening fire indiscriminately on the law enforcement officers.

Lieutenant Colonel Md Khalid Ibn Hossain, Commander of the 23 BGB Yamini Para Battalion, confirmed that his forces were compelled to retaliate in self-defence. A tense exchange of fire ensued, lasting intermittently for eight to ten minutes before the armed group broke off the engagement and retreated deep into the forest. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported on either side during the standoff.

The Chittagong Hill Tracts region, particularly areas bordering neighbouring nations, has historically faced challenges related to cross-border trafficking, illegal arms movement, and insurgent activities. In light of this recent incident, Lieutenant Colonel Hossain emphasised that the BGB has escalated its vigilant surveillance over the sector. Key transit points and suspected routes for illegal entry, arms trafficking, and narcotics smuggling have been identified for intensified patrolling. Legal procedures regarding the seized weapons and ammunition are currently underway at the local police station.
