Father Beaten to Death by Teenager in Savar Drug Dispute

A tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Monday in Savar, on the outskirts of the Bangladeshi capital, where a 38-year-old man was allegedly killed by his teenage son following a heated dispute over substance abuse.

The deceased has been identified as Mohin Miyan, a local milk vendor residing in the Chhakipara area of Rajfulbaria, located within the Tetuljhora Union of Savar. According to local residents and primary investigations, the fatal altercation broke out during the quiet hours of dawn when Mohin Miyan confronted his 15-year-old son, Jishan, attempting to prevent him from consuming drugs.

A Fatal Confrontation

Witnesses reported that an argument erupted between the father and son regarding Jishan’s illicit drug consumption. As the disagreement escalated, the teenager reportedly launched a violent assault on his father. During the physical altercation, Jishan struck Mohin Miyan severely, inflicting fatal trauma to his testicles. The intensity of the blow caused Mohin Miyan to collapse and succumb to his injuries at the scene before any medical assistance could be rendered.

Alerted by the commotion, neighbours gathered at the residence and immediately notified the authorities. Officers from the Savar Model Police Station arrived swiftly at the location to secure the scene, recover the victim’s body, and detain the accused teenager.

Police Investigation and Broader Context

Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Savar Model Police Station, Noor Mohammad, stated that law enforcement acted promptly upon receiving information from the locals. The body has since been dispatched to the morgue at the Shahid Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for a formal post-mortem examination to establish the precise cause of death.

“We have recovered the body from the spot following reports from local residents,” said OC Noor Mohammad. “The victim’s minor son has been taken into custody in connection with the homicide, and legal proceedings are currently underway.”

The Growing Spectre of Youth Substance Abuse

This distressing event highlights an alarming trend of drug abuse among adolescents in suburban and industrial belts like Savar. Community leaders and social observers have increasingly voiced concerns over the easy accessibility of narcotics, which frequently leads to domestic violence, broken family structures, and violent crimes. Incidents where parental intervention to curb addiction culminates in severe domestic tragedy reflect a deepening socio-economic challenge that law enforcement agencies and community outreach programmes are continually striving to address.

Further investigation into the murder is ongoing, with police preparing to register a formal case following the receipt of the detailed autopsy report.
