Madrasa Teacher Detained Over Alleged Sexual Abuse of Minor in Patuakhali

Police in the Dumki sub-district of Patuakhali have taken a madrasa teacher into custody following serious allegations of sexually abusing a young student under his care. The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage across the local community, led to the immediate apprehension and handing over of the suspect to law enforcement authorities on Monday morning.

The accused, identified as Md Ibrahim, serves as a teacher at an Islamic religious educational institution situated in the Muradia Union within the Dumki sub-district. According to local sources and preliminary complaints, the alleged assault took place early on Monday morning on the premises of the institution.

Details of the Incident and Community Response

Reports indicate that following the alleged sexual violation, Ibrahim attempted to intimidate the minor victim, issuing severe threats to ensure the child remained silent about the ordeal. Undeterred by the threats, the child returned home and disclosed the distressing incident to family members. Upon learning of the gravity of the situation, the victim’s guardians immediately alerted the local community.

Incensed by the revelations, local residents mobilised swiftly, apprehending the teacher at the scene before handing him over directly to the Dumki police officers called to the location.

Statement of the Accused:

During preliminary questioning, Md Ibrahim categorically denied all allegations leveled against him. He maintained his innocence, claiming to be the victim of a calculated conspiracy intended to frame him and tarnish his reputation within the community.

Police Investigation and Legal Action

Law enforcement officials have initiated formal proceedings to investigate the matter thoroughly. Speaking on the ongoing developments, Md Selim Uddin, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dumki Police Station, confirmed that the suspect is currently in police custody and that legal measures are being actively pursued based on the formal complaint lodged by the victim’s family.

“We have received a written complaint from the guardians of the affected child,” stated Officer-in-Charge Md Selim Uddin. “The suspect is in custody, and appropriate legal action is being taken in strict accordance with the law. A comprehensive investigation has been launched to establish the full facts of the case, and the child is being provided with the necessary support and medical examination standard in such sensitive proceedings.”

Broader Background and Legal Context

Incidents of child abuse in educational environments, particularly within residential and religious institutions across Bangladesh, have increasingly come under stringent public and legal scrutiny in recent years. Rights advocates and legal experts have repeatedly called for robust institutional oversight, stricter background checks for educators, and the implementation of formal child protection policies in all learning centres nationwide.

Under Bangladeshi law—specifically the Prevention of Oppression Against Women and Children Act—offences involving the sexual abuse of minors carry severe legal penalties, including lengthy imprisonment. Local human rights organisations have reiterated the necessity for swift judicial processing and impartial investigations to ensure justice is served promptly while safeguarding the welfare and privacy of minor victims.

The police have assured the public that a transparent investigation will be conducted, with formal charges expected to be framed as soon as initial evidence gathering and medical assessments are concluded.
