Injury-Hit Bangladesh Target Respect on Return to Australian Test Arena

Bangladesh return to Australia for a Test series for the first time in 23 years, yet key injuries have severely weakened Najmul Hossain Shanto’s squad ahead of the historic tour. Fast bowler Musfik Hasan, the youngest member of the touring party and awaiting his Test debut, was born a year after Bangladesh last played a Test on Australian soil—a two-match series in 2003 that ended in heavy innings defeats. Despite these setbacks and a depleted roster, Chief Selector Habibul Bashar expressed optimism during a press conference at Mirpur following the squad announcement, stating that the team aims to return home with respect as well as results.

The opening Test squad faces major selection gaps following injuries to key players. Wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das and left-arm paceman Shoriful Islam have been excluded from the first Test, whilst tearaway fast bowler Nahid Rana has been ruled out of the entire series. Missing Litton’s solidity in the middle order and Rana’s raw pace leaves Bangladesh facing a formidable challenge against a dominant Australian side.

Reflecting on the squad’s preparation, Bashar acknowledged the sudden disruption caused by fitness issues. Over the past year, Bangladesh had maintained a stable, well-balanced Test core that delivered consistent performances. The national selection panel held out until the final moment in hopes that at least one injured star might be cleared by medical staff, but physical setbacks ultimately forced changes to their tactical plans.

To address ongoing top-order instability—a flaw evident during the recent Test series against Zimbabwe—selectors recalled left-handed opener Soumya Sarkar after a five-year absence from the Test side. Addressing criticisms regarding Sarkar’s inclusion over younger domestic run-scorers, Bashar explained that sending inexperienced batters into unfamiliar, fast-paced Australian conditions posed a significant risk. The panel opted instead for Sarkar’s international experience to offer stability at the top of the order.

The spate of injuries has also ignited debate regarding player workload management and the medical team’s oversight, particularly concerning Nahid Rana’s usage prior to the tour. Dismissing claims of poor planning, Bashar clarified that fast bowlers require a calibrated amount of match overs to remain in the physical “green zone,” noting that bowling too little carries as much risk of injury as bowling too much.

Despite the tactical hurdles and fitness concerns, the selection panel remains determined to focus on the available talent, backing the squad to deliver competitive performances and earn cricket dignity on Australian soil.
