Border Force Destroys £32m Worth of Drugs

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has destroyed a vast cache of narcotics worth nearly £32 million seized from border এলাকায় operations in Satkhira, underscoring the force’s continued crackdown on cross-border smuggling.

The destruction took place on Tuesday morning at the Nil Dumur-based 17 BGB Battalion headquarters in a formal অনুষ্ঠানে attended by senior officials. Brigadier General Mahmudul Hasan, commander of the BGB’s south-western region, was present as chief guest and oversaw the process.

According to BGB officials, the destroyed narcotics carried an estimated market value of Tk 319.43 million. The seizures were made during a series of operations conducted between 7 September 2023 and 11 July 2026 across key সীমান্ত points including Shyamnagar, Debhata and Kaliganj উপজেলায়. Over that period, law enforcement personnel confiscated smuggled goods worth more than Tk 518.57 million and detained 41 individuals suspected of involvement in trafficking networks.

The destroyed substances represented a broad spectrum of illicit drugs and contraband. These included 15,078 bottles of Phensedyl, 18,654 ইয়াবা tablets, 1 kilogram of heroin, 2.4 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (commonly known as ‘ice’), and 14 bottles of LSD. এছাড়াও, large quantities of alcohol, 2,176,257 units of unauthorised medicines, 75,766 packets of Indian leaf cigarettes, 3.81 kilograms of cannabis, and a significant volume of অন্যান্য narcotic tablets were also incinerated.

Speaking at the event, Brigadier General Hasan reiterated BGB’s “zero tolerance” stance against drug trafficking. He noted that personnel remain on constant alert along the border to prevent the flow of narcotics into the country. However, he stressed that enforcement efforts alone would not suffice. Public awareness and active community participation are essential if Bangladesh is to effectively combat the spread of drugs.

The অনুষ্ঠানে was chaired by Lieutenant Colonel Khandakar Abu Sahl Abdullah, commanding officer of the 17 BGB Battalion. Representatives from multiple agencies were present, including the Khulna Sector command, Satkhira জেলা police, the district administration, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-6), the Department of Narcotics Control, customs authorities, the বন বিভাগ, fire service and the coast guard.

The বড় আকারের destruction programme reflects ongoing concerns about drug trafficking routes along the southwestern frontier. Authorities believe sustained অভিযান and coordinated inter-agency efforts remain critical to disrupting smuggling syndicates operating across the border.
