Oil Prices Surge Again as Middle East Tensions Rattle Markets

Global crude oil prices rose sharply on Wednesday as renewed military exchanges between the United States and Iran heightened fears of prolonged instability in the Middle East, while a decline in US crude inventories added further upward pressure to the market.

The latest rise came after several relatively quieter days in the region, with fresh attacks reviving concerns that the conflict could intensify and disrupt energy supplies. Oil markets are particularly sensitive to developments in the Middle East because the region remains central to global crude production and international energy trade.

At around 11.20am Bangladesh time on Wednesday, 29 July, the international benchmark Brent crude price had climbed by $3.15 a barrel, or 3.8 per cent, to $87.24. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also gained $2.73 a barrel, or 3.4 per cent, reaching $81.99.

The latest increase followed a period of weakness in the oil market. On Tuesday, 28 July, Brent crude fell below $85 a barrel, marking its lowest level since 20 July. The subsequent rebound reflects renewed uncertainty over the direction of the regional conflict and its potential impact on oil supplies and shipping routes.

Analysts at ING said the market had begun pricing in a greater risk of prolonged instability after an attempted surprise attack against US forces was thwarted. The development, they suggested, has weakened hopes of a rapid de-escalation and encouraged traders to factor a higher geopolitical risk premium into crude prices.

Tensions also escalated after the United States and Saudi Arabia launched joint strikes against Iran-backed armed groups in Iraq in response to a drone attack on a Saudi oil facility. The latest developments have added to concerns about the security of critical energy infrastructure across the region.

Another major source of uncertainty is the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints. Tehran has formally rejected an Omani proposal for a joint management arrangement for the waterway. Before the conflict began, roughly one-fifth of global crude oil and natural gas supplies passed through the strait, making any sustained disruption there a serious risk to international energy markets.

The possibility of disruption has implications far beyond oil-producing countries. A prolonged crisis could raise transport and production costs, increase fuel prices and contribute to broader inflationary pressures in economies that rely heavily on imported energy. Countries across Asia, including major oil-importing nations, would be particularly exposed to a sustained increase in international crude prices.

Suprabho Sarkar, head of energy research at DBS Bank, said continued uncertainty surrounding the Middle East conflict could keep Brent crude trading in the range of $80 to $100 a barrel for the time being.

Supply data from the United States has also contributed to the latest price rise. According to figures from the American Petroleum Institute, US crude inventories fell by 3.3 million barrels in the week ending 24 July. A decline in stockpiles can support prices by signalling tighter near-term supply conditions, particularly when it coincides with heightened geopolitical risks.

The combination of renewed military tensions, uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz and falling US crude inventories has therefore given oil prices fresh momentum. Market participants are likely to remain focused on developments in the Middle East as they assess whether the latest escalation will be temporary or develop into a broader disruption to global energy supplies.
