Local Jamaat-e-Islami Leader Assaulted Over Alleged Extra-Marital Affair in Bauphal

Tensions have flared in the Daspara Union of Bauphal Upazila following a violent altercation in which a local leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was physically assaulted over allegations of an extramarital relationship. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday night, has sparked conflicting claims between the involved parties, prompting local law enforcement to monitor the situation closely.

Details of the Incident

The victim, identified as Farooq Hossain Pada, serves as the Secretary for Ward No. 3 of the Jamaat-e-Islami unit in Daspara Union. According to local residents, the assault took place at approximately 8:30 pm on 29 July, when a group of individuals detained and severely beat Farooq after accusing him of maintaining an inappropriate relationship with a local housewife.

As news of the assault spread rapidly through the village, a crowd gathered, escalating local tension. Community members eventually intervened to rescue Farooq, who sustained multiple injuries during the attack. He was subsequently rushed to the Bauphal Upazila Health Complex, where he is currently undergoing medical treatment.

Conflicting Statements and Extortion Allegations

Farooq Hossain has vehemently denied the allegations brought against him, characterizing the incident as a pre-planned attack stemming from long-standing personal feuds. Speaking from his hospital bed, he asserted that local residents, including individuals named Saidul and Parvez from the Mridha household, orchestrated the assault under false pretences.

“The allegations leveled against me are completely baseless,” Farooq stated. “There was a pre-existing dispute with these individuals. Capitalizing on that enmity, they launched a deliberate attack on me and are now spreading malicious propaganda to tarnish my reputation.”

Furthermore, Farooq alleged that his attackers forcibly seized 50,000 Bangladeshi Taka in cash and a mobile phone from his possession during the assault.

Conversely, the mother-in-law of the woman involved, Jahanara Begum, offered a starkly different account of events. She alleged that Farooq had been harassing her daughter-in-law for a considerable period, repeatedly offering monetary inducements and making inappropriate advances. According to Jahanara Begum, the matter had previously been brought before a traditional local arbitration process (salish) in an attempt to resolve the issue, but Farooq allegedly continued his advances despite prior warnings.

Official Response and Legal Proceedings

The incident highlights the ongoing reliance on informal local arbitrations in rural Bangladesh to settle community grievances, which occasionally spill over into physical violence when consensus fails.

When contacted regarding the breach of peace, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bauphal Police Station, Sirajul Islam, confirmed that police personnel were dispatched to the scene immediately upon receiving reports of the clash to restore order. He noted that law enforcement officials are waiting for a formal written complaint from the aggrieved parties before initiating a thorough investigation and taking appropriate legal measures in accordance with the law.
