Measles Outbreak Claims Three More Young Lives

Bangladesh continues to grapple with a worrying measles outbreak, with three more children dying from measles-related complications and symptoms over the past 24 hours, while 872 new infections were reported nationwide. The latest figures have heightened concern among public health experts, who warn that the disease continues to pose a serious threat, particularly to young children.

According to the latest bulletin issued on Saturday (1 August) by the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the country is still witnessing a significant rise in both suspected and confirmed measles cases.

The DGHS reported that between 8:00 a.m. on Friday and 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, three children died after developing symptoms consistent with measles. None of the deaths during this reporting period were laboratory-confirmed measles cases. Of the three children who died, one was from the Sylhet Division, one from the Mymensingh Division, and one from the Rangpur Division.

The latest fatalities add to a mounting death toll since the current outbreak began. From 15 March to Saturday morning—a period spanning 139 days—a total of 840 children have died from either confirmed measles or measles-like symptoms across the country. Of these, 744 children died after exhibiting symptoms associated with the disease, while laboratory testing confirmed measles infection in 96 fatal cases.

Health authorities also reported a continued increase in hospital admissions linked to the outbreak. During the past 24 hours, 687 newly infected patients required hospitalisation for treatment. Over the same period, 538 children recovered sufficiently to be discharged from hospitals, indicating that while many patients are responding to treatment, healthcare facilities continue to face a steady inflow of new cases.

Official data show that since 15 March, Bangladesh has recorded 129,061 suspected measles cases. Laboratory testing has so far confirmed 16,180 infections. The figures suggest that the outbreak remains widespread, with health officials continuing surveillance and diagnostic testing to monitor its progression.

Hospital records further reveal the substantial burden placed on the country’s healthcare system. Since the outbreak began, 111,674 patients have been admitted to hospitals with measles or suspected measles. Encouragingly, 107,397 patients have recovered and returned home following treatment, although thousands have required prolonged medical care.

Public health specialists have repeatedly stressed that measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads rapidly through respiratory droplets, particularly in communities with low immunisation coverage. Young children, especially those who are unvaccinated or under-vaccinated, face the greatest risk of developing severe complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis and, in some cases, death.

The latest statistics underscore the continued need for close monitoring of the outbreak, timely diagnosis, appropriate clinical management and sustained public health measures aimed at limiting transmission and protecting vulnerable children. Health authorities continue to monitor the evolving situation as the country seeks to contain one of its most significant measles outbreaks in recent years.
