Schoolgirl Suffers Fractured Spine After Vicious Assault by Madrasa Instructor in Sreenagar

In a harrowing development that has ignited public indignation throughout Munshiganj, a nine-year-old female pupil has sustained a broken spine following a violent beating allegedly inflicted by a teacher at a local madrasa. The assault, reportedly carried out on the grounds that the child had failed to memorize her daily lessons, has culminated in official criminal complaints being lodged against two members of the academic staff.

The victim, Ankhi Akhtar, attends the second grade at Bage Nuraniya Hafeziya Madrasa, situated in the Masjidpur Dayhata locality of Birtara Union within Sreenagar Upazila. Details outlined in the formal police statement reveal that the primary incident occurred on 24th July. The implicated teacher, Md. Safayet, reportedly attacked the young girl with a heavy wooden stick, inflicting repeated blows across her body after she struggled with her classwork.

In the immediate aftermath, the instructor allegedly threatened Ankhi with further corporal punishment if she dared to inform her household. Overwhelmed by anxiety, the child chose to remain silent. However, as the intense physical trauma intensified over the following days, her family noticed her visible distress and severe mobility issues. Upon detailed questioning, Ankhi disclosed the ordeal. Her guardians immediately transported her to a nearby hospital, where diagnostic scans confirmed a complete fracture of her spinal structure caused by heavy blunt force.

When the victim’s father, Md. Alamgir Khan, confronted the principal of the madrasa, Md. Tofazzal, regarding the instructor’s violent behaviour, the headmaster reportedly instructed him to hush up the matter rather than offering assistance or internal redress. Disgusted by the administration’s cover-up attempt and concerned by the worsening state of his daughter’s health, Khan gathered support from fellow villagers and submitted a written complaint to the Sreenagar Police Station on Saturday, 1st August.

News of the incident triggered widespread anger in the surrounding community, leading to a large-scale demonstration on the madrasa grounds on Friday, 31st July, where local residents demanded the immediate arrest and legal accountability of the teachers involved. Corporal punishment in educational environments remains a critical child welfare issue across Bangladesh, running directly counter to directives issued by the High Court Division, which explicitly banned physical violence against students in all academic institutions.

Confirming the development, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sreenagar Police Station, Jewel Miah, stated that law enforcement has accepted the written petition and initiated a formal enquiry into the allegations. He confirmed that police officers are working alongside the victim’s family to ensure a comprehensive investigation and promised that full statutory measures would be enforced against the perpetrators.
