Security forces in Northern Bangladesh have detained a former local councillor and key political operative following intelligence reports that he was attempting to coordinate covert activities in the region.
Arrest in the Damdama Area
The suspect, identified as Mizanur Rahman (popularly known as Mizan), was taken into police custody on Saturday morning during a targeted operation near the Damdama Sluice Gate in Singra Pourashava. Rahman, residing in North Damdama and son of Muktadudur Rahman, served previously as the councillor for Ward No. 2 and held the position of Organising Secretary within the local branch of the Singra Pourashava Awami League.
Police officials reported that the raid was executed following specific intelligence regarding Rahman’s activities. He is accused of leveraging virtual communication channels and online conferencing tools to secretly rally local party loyalists, coordinate political activities despite official bans, and plot acts of public sabotage designed to destabilise order in the municipality.
Law Enforcement Response and Formal Charges
Speaking on behalf of the local law enforcement apparatus, Rafiqul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Singra Police Station, verified the legal action taken against Rahman. Official sabotage charges have been formally lodged, and the suspect remains in custody pending further court directives and police investigations.
Heightened Regional Surveillance
This legal action mirrors a broader crackdown across Natore district, where authorities have elevated security protocols to counter underground political mobilisation. Police units have expanded digital surveillance and ground intelligence to monitor both remote electronic meetings and localized gatherings, aiming to preempt disruptions to civic stability and maintain public safety across the district.
