Four Awami League Leaders Arrested After Sudden Midnight Procession

Police have arrested four leaders belonging to the banned Awami League and its associate organisations following a sudden candlelit procession in Mymensingh’s Nandail upazila. The late-night operation took place in Rasulpur village, where activists had gathered to observe a designated political programme. Authorities have subsequently charged the detainees under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

According to local sources, local party members and representatives from affiliated bodies assembled on an unpaved road in the Bilpar area of Rasulpur village on Friday night. The gathering was organised to mark a political programme scheduled for 1 August. Participants carried a banner featuring the photograph of Anwarul Abedin Khan Tuhin, the controversial former Member of Parliament for the Nandail constituency.

During the gathering, the activists lit candles and chanted anti-government slogans. The sudden activity on a secluded rural road stirred panic among local residents, raising immediate concerns regarding public order and potential civil instability in the area.

Acting on a tip-off regarding the provocative assembly, a team from Nandail Model Police Station conducted a targeted raid late at night. Officers surrounded the location and managed to apprehend four key individuals from the scene while others scattered.

The arrested individuals have been identified as:

• Md Aminul Huq Shaheen, 40, General Secretary of the Moazzempur Union Jubo League

• Jannat Ullah, 37, Member of the Moazzempur Union Awami League

• Zohirul Islam, 39, Member of the Moazzempur Union Awami League

• Mahedi Hasan Sarkar, 20, General Secretary of a local ward unit of the Chhatra League

Following preliminary interrogations at the station, law enforcement formalised the charges against the four men. Police officials confirmed that the legal action was taken due to deliberate attempts to disrupt public safety, incite unrest, and breach regional peace.

Azaharul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Nandail Model Police Station, verified the detentions and noted that the suspects were presented before the court under anti-terrorism regulations. He added that police drives remain ongoing across the upazila to identify, track down, and arrest other participants involved in the unauthorised rally, ensuring that stability and order are strictly maintained throughout the locality.
