Police have recovered the body of a nine-year-old girl from the side of a railway line in Nagarkanda upazila under Faridpur district, sparking local grief and outrage. The deceased child has been identified as Mahmuda Akter, the youngest of four siblings and the daughter of Idris Mollah, a resident of Tarakandi village within Char Yashordi union. While the child’s family suspects she was sexually assaulted and murdered, law enforcement authorities have launched an investigation to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding her death.
According to family members and local residents, Mahmuda went missing on Saturday afternoon at around 5:00 pm. When she failed to return home, relatives began searching nearby homesteads and surrounding areas, but their initial efforts proved unsuccessful. Hours later, at approximately 9:00 pm, local villagers spotted a body lying motionless near a family graveyard adjacent to the railway line in Tarakandi village. They alerted the authorities, and a police team promptly arrived at the scene to recover the body.
The condition in which the child was found raised serious suspicions among her relatives. Shahnaj Begum, the sister-in-law of the victim, alleged that Mahmuda’s body was discovered entirely unclothed. None of her garments were located nearby despite a search of the immediate surroundings. Driven by these circumstances, the family strongly suspects that the young girl was subjected to sexual assault before being killed.
Police officers at the scene completed the preliminary inquest before sending the body to the morgue at Faridpur Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Forensics and autopsy reports are expected to clarify whether sexual violence occurred prior to her death.
Investigating officers have already taken two individuals into custody for questioning to assist with the inquiry. Mohammad Al Fahad, Assistant Superintendent of Police for the Nagarkanda Circle, stated that initial evidence points towards homicide. He noted that preliminary information suggests the child might have suffered a fatal injury while playing with another youngster, though investigators are actively exploring every possible angle to ensure no detail is overlooked.
The victim’s family is currently preparing to file a formal case with the police station. Senior officers assured the public that necessary legal action will be taken swiftly once the investigation and forensic reports are finalised.
