Severe Heatwave Grips Israel with Temperatures Approaching 47°C

JERUSALEM — Israel is experiencing a punishing summer heatwave, with temperatures climbing toward peak levels across several regions, according to weather reports published on Sunday (August 2). Meteorologists warned that mercury levels could surge up to 45°C near the Sea of Galilee and hit 46.5°C in parts of the Jordan Valley.

Sunday’s meteorological forecast highlighted hot, dry conditions in mountainous and inland zones, while high humidity levels continue to impact the coastal plains, creating extreme heat discomfort countrywide. Wind speeds were expected to intensify from late afternoon, particularly across inland and elevated regions.

High Temperatures Recorded Across Regions

The current heat surge follows sharply rising temperatures on Saturday, when multiple locations crossed the 40°C threshold:

• Jordan Valley & Inland Sites: Gilgal, Capernaum, and Beit She’an all recorded peak temperatures of 43.5°C.

• Jerusalem Area: Severe heat impacted the capital region, with Jerusalem’s Old City registering 36.1°C.

• Coastal Plain: While air temperatures along the coast remained relatively lower at around 30°C, atmospheric humidity soared to 75 per cent, creating oppressive and muggy conditions.

Weather Outlook for the Week

The Israel Meteorological Service projects a gradual cooling trend over the coming days:

• Monday: Temperatures will drop slightly across inland and mountainous areas, though heat indices will remain above average. High coastal humidity will persist, keeping heat stress moderate to extreme. Afternoon winds will gather speed once more in the hills.

• Tuesday: Skies will clear after a partly cloudy morning, with temperatures falling further inland and in higher altitudes.

• Wednesday: Seasonable conditions are expected to return as temperatures normalize across mountainous and internal areas, though humid conditions along the coastline will continue.
