Business Leaders Claim Interim Government Left Economy In Severe Deep Waters

A prominent group of business leaders in Dhaka has sparked renewed debate over Bangladesh’s economic transition, alleging that the former interim administration led by Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus left the nation facing severe financial turmoil. Speaking at a discussion meeting in the capital, commercial representatives expressed deep concern over the macroeconomic climate, claiming the outgoing government departed while leaving the country’s trade, industry, and financial sectors in “uncharted waters”.

Allegations and Official Rebuttal

During the forum, delegates from the business sector argued that corporate activities and broader economic operations suffered intense volatility throughout the tenure of the interim administration. They asserted that the governance structure concluded its duties without stabilizing key economic indicators or implementing long-term recovery mechanisms to safeguard domestic commerce.

The assertions were strongly contested by the event’s chief guest, Dr Anisuzzaman Chowdhury, a former special assistant to the Chief Adviser. Rejecting claims that Dr Yunus had abandoned his office or departed voluntarily, Dr Chowdhury stated that the leadership was forced to relinquish power amidst severe, escalating political strain. He highlighted that a sequence of relentless street demonstrations, civic agitation, and the eventual siege of Jamuna—the official residence of the Chief Adviser—created an unviable environment for the interim administration to continue its mandate.

According to Dr Chowdhury, the severe political unrest and ongoing civil agitation made it practically impossible for the non-partisan government to maintain stability or extend its tenure.

Macroeconomic Context and Political Transition

The interim government under Dr Muhammad Yunus was established in August 2024 following a historic mass uprising that led to the collapse of the previous regime. Tasked with restoring law and order, managing structural economic reform, and overseeing a peaceful political transition, the administration remained in office until early 2026.

Following the 13th National Parliamentary Election in February 2026, the interim administration formally handed over authority to the newly elected sovereign government. While the democratic process culminated in a successful transition, the economic aftermath—characterised by inflation, industrial disruption, and reduced trade velocity—continues to serve as a point of contention between the commercial sector and representatives of the former transitional authorities.
