Dengue Surge in Bangladesh Triggers Fresh Public Health Concerns

At least three further patients have lost their lives to dengue fever across Bangladesh over a 24-hour window, while 580 new admissions were recorded across national hospitals, according to data from the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The figures underscore a worrying rise in mosquito-borne transmission as monsoon rainfall continues, prompting public health bodies to heighten monitoring and emergency measures across affected districts.

The latest fatalities highlight the spread of the virus across both major metropolitan municipalities and regional areas. Single deaths were logged in the Dhaka South City Corporation, the Khulna Division, and the Sylhet Division, bringing the national death toll linked to laboratory-confirmed dengue fever to 59 for the current year.

Hospital admissions reflect a widespread distribution across both urban hubs and provincial regions. Hospitals across the wider Dhaka Division admitted 125 patients, whilst healthcare institutions within the Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City Corporation recorded 78 and 59 admissions respectively. Outside the capital, the Barishal Division registered 81 hospitalisations, followed by Chattogram with 79 and Khulna with 67, alongside smaller numbers across Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Rangpur, and Sylhet.

With these 580 additional hospitalisations, the cumulative total of recorded dengue cases nationwide since the start of the year has reached 16,684. Epidemiologists attribute the rising infection rate to stagnant rainwater and urban waterlogging, which create ideal breeding environments for Aedes mosquitoes. Public health specialists warn that hospital admissions could rise further throughout August and September unless vector eradication efforts are stepped up significantly.

Local government bodies are executing anti-mosquito measures, including larvicidal treatment and fogging operations in vulnerable areas, though experts stress the importance of community involvement. Residents are encouraged to clear standing water from flowerpots, discarded containers, tyres, and drainage trays to disrupt mosquito breeding cycles. Concurrently, medical facilities have been advised to maintain adequate supplies of diagnostic test kits and intravenous fluids, whilst doctors urge patients presenting with high fever, acute fatigue, or abdominal pain to seek professional medical care promptly rather than attempting self-medication.
