Jamaat Supporter Detained at Another Woman’s House After Four Marriages

Police in Panchagarh Sadar Upazila have rescued a 42-year-old man and a woman after local residents detained him at her residence late on Monday night. The incident occurred around 11:00 pm on 3 August in the Goijpara area under Haribhasa Union.

Local residents identified the individual as Johirul Islam, claiming that he had married four times previously. Neighbours also described him as a local supporter of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

According to local sources, residents surrounded the residence upon discovering Islam inside the woman’s home. The crowd subsequently restrained him, tying him with rope to a pillar on the veranda. Police officers dispatched to the scene late on Monday were initially unable to extract him due to the presence of an agitated crowd. Officers returned on Tuesday morning, 4 August, successfully taking both Islam and the woman into protective custody and transferring them to Panchagarh Sadar Police Station.

The incident sparked widespread discussion across social media platforms, with commentators debating Islam’s alleged affiliation with Jamaat-e-Islami. However, district leaders of the political party clarified his status, stating that while he may have supported the party in a general capacity, he holds no official membership or organisational position within the structure.

Mokhlesh, Officer-in-Charge of Panchagarh Sadar Police Station, confirmed that both individuals remain at the station while officers evaluate the situation. Authorities noted that as of 3:00 pm on Tuesday, no formal written complaint had been lodged by any party regarding the incident. Police confirmed that appropriate legal steps will proceed once a formal complaint is submitted.
