Tejgaon Jubo League Leader Arrested in Chandpur

Police have arrested a local official of the Jubo League, the youth wing of the Awami League, in connection with the 2015 attack on former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia’s motorcade in Dhaka. Officers from the Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station carried out the raid during the early hours of Monday, 3 August, arresting the suspect in the Torpurchandi Union of Chandpur Sadar Upazila.

The arrested individual has been identified as Hannan Miah, son of Mofiz Majhi from the Torpurchandi area. Miah serves as the president of Unit 2 of the Jubo League’s Tejgaon Ward branch in Dhaka.

The arrest relates to a violent incident that occurred nearly a decade ago, on 20 April 2015, when the motorcade of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia came under attack at Banglamotor in the capital during election campaigning for the Dhaka city corporation polls. On 23 November 2024, nearly ten years after the assault, a complaint was formally lodged by a citizen named Fazlul Karim. The case named over two hundred individuals, including former Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader. Hannan Miah was listed as the 178th accused in the charge sheet.

Mohammad Fayez Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station, confirmed that a police team led by Sub-Inspector Gazi Kamal executed the raid following a specific intelligence tip-off regarding Miah’s location.

Police clarified that although Miah had previously secured bail in connection with the motorcade attack case, he was formally placed under arrest under a separate warrant concerning subversion and acts of sabotage. Following preliminary police procedures, officers escorted him to the Chandpur District Court on Monday afternoon.
