Police in Jashore have charged 133 individuals, including former mayor Zahirul Islam Chaklader Rentu and former councillor Haji Suman, following an alleged anti-government gathering and sabotage attempt. Nine party activists arrested in connection with the case have been remanded to judicial custody by a local court.
Sub-Inspector Fazlul Haque of the Kotwali Police Station filed the primary case on Sunday, 2 August.
According to formal police allegations, members and activists of the Awami League and its associate organisations gathered near the Rajarhat Picnic Corner in Jashore Sadar Upazila on the night of 31 July. Investigators state that the group assembled to stage anti-government demonstrations and prepare acts of sabotage. Police units dispatched to the location caused the gathering to disperse, prompting Sub-Inspector Haque to initiate legal proceedings against 133 named suspects alongside several unidentified individuals.
Police confirmed that six suspects were arrested in connection with the primary incident: Sheikh Tanvir Islam Imon (also known as Captain Imon), Fardin Durjoy, Ohidul Islam Sheikh, Rakibul Rahman (known as Boro Babu), Al Amin, and Samrat Hossain. During raids conducted that same night, officers detained three additional individuals under a separate case: incumbent Union Parishad (UP) member Moinur Rahman, along with former UP members Nurul Islam and Akram Hossain. All nine individuals were produced before the court and subsequently transferred to prison.
High-profile figures named in the charge sheet include former municipality mayor Zahirul Islam Chaklader Rentu, former councillor Haji Suman, Jubo League leader Saiduzzaman Babu (known as Dantal Babu), Awami League leader Sheikh Atiqur Babu, former Sadar Upazila Parishad chairman Fontu Chaklader, and former vice-chairman Anwar Hossain Bipul.
Other prominent political figures cited in the case include former UP chairman Mahamudul Hasan Life, Habibor Rahman of Dolonnagar, former Upshahar chairman Ehsanul Haq Litu, Munsur Ali and Chima of Upshahar, former Narendrapur UP chairman Raju, and former Churamankati UP chairman Abdul Mannan Munna. Law enforcement officials confirmed that operations remain ongoing to trace and apprehend the remaining absconding suspects.
