An Awami League leader accused in the murder of a university student during the July uprising has been sent to jail following his arrest by detectives in Magura.
Mushfikur Rahman Milton, 45, an accused in the killing of Farhad Hossain, a student of the University of Chittagong, was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Magura District Police. He was produced before a court on Tuesday (4 August), which ordered that he be sent to jail pending further legal proceedings.
According to police, Milton was arrested on Monday evening during a raid conducted in the Jaria village area of Sreepur Upazila. Detectives apprehended him in front of a local shop after acting on confidential intelligence regarding his whereabouts.
The accused is the son of the late Siddiq Molla of Mokarddomkhola village in Sreepur Upazila. He previously served as the General Secretary of the Sabdalpur Union unit of the Awami League. Investigators confirmed that he is the 13th named accused in the murder case filed over the death of Farhad Hossain.
Sub-Inspector Mehedi Hasan of the Magura District Detective Branch said the arrest was made following a targeted intelligence operation. He stated that Milton had been listed as a named suspect in the case relating to the fatal shooting of the University of Chittagong student during the anti-discrimination student movement in Magura. After his arrest, he was presented before the court on Tuesday afternoon and subsequently remanded to judicial custody.
The case centres on the death of Farhad Hossain, who was allegedly shot during the nationwide anti-discrimination student protests that swept across Bangladesh during the July uprising. The demonstrations, initially driven by opposition to the public-sector quota system, expanded into a broader movement marked by widespread unrest and violent clashes in several parts of the country. A number of protesters lost their lives during the period, prompting criminal investigations into individual incidents.
Law enforcement agencies have continued efforts to trace and arrest individuals named in cases connected to deaths and violence during the protests. Police say operations are being conducted on the basis of evidence collected during the investigations and intelligence gathered regarding the locations of suspects.
Authorities have indicated that the investigation into Farhad Hossain’s killing remains ongoing, and further legal action will depend on the progress of the inquiry and the evidence presented before the court. The case is one of several linked to fatalities that occurred during the unrest, as investigators continue to pursue those named in the respective first information reports (FIRs).
