Woman Survives 18-Storey Fall in China After Violent Dispute

In a remarkable turn of events in Eastern China, a 20-year-old woman miraculously survived falling from an 18th-floor apartment balcony following an all-night dispute with her boyfriend. The incident occurred in Jiaxing, a city in Zhejiang province, where lush foliage beneath the residential block broke her drop, preventing a fatal outcome.

According to reports published by the South China Morning Post on Tuesday, the incident took place around 4:30 am on 12th July. To protect her privacy, local authorities and media have referred to the young woman using the pseudonym Xiaoyi.

Family members disclosed that Xiaoyi had been arguing for hours with her boyfriend inside their rented apartment. Having previously resolved to end the relationship, she had purchased a train ticket to return to her home province of Yunnan on 10th July. Her partner, however, refused to accept the separation and blocked her departure.

Tensions escalated dramatically on the night of 11th July. In an attempt to prevent her from leaving, the boyfriend confiscated Xiaoyi’s national identity card and mobile phone before locking the apartment door from the outside. Trap-bound and increasingly desperate, the young woman jumped from the 18th-floor balcony in an effort to escape the locked flat.

Her descent was dramatically cushioned by a large tree standing directly beneath the residential structure. After crashing through the branches, she landed in a dense patch of shrubs. Though she sustained catastrophic injuries, the natural buffer spared her life. Her boyfriend subsequently rushed her to a local medical centre and paid an initial deposit of 20,000 yuan towards her emergency care.

Attending physicians reported that Xiaoyi suffered severe trauma to her head, lungs, liver, and spleen. The force of the impact also shattered her pelvis, pubic bone, and both legs. Surgeons successfully performed two major operations shortly after her admission. However, a third crucial procedure scheduled for late July had to be postponed due to a severe shortfall in household funds.

Upon regaining consciousness, Xiaoyi recounted the traumatic sequence of events to her relatives. Her uncle, publicly identified as Mr Li, noted that the couple had a history of volatile arguments. On that night, after hours of relentless fighting, she was mentally exhausted and panicked. Her sole objective was to flee the apartment and get away from her partner at any cost. Mr Li added that his niece now deeply regrets her impulsive decision.

The incident has plunged the family into acute financial distress. Xiaoyi’s mother was diagnosed with cancer in 2022, a medical battle that exhausted the family’s life savings and left them heavily indebted. Hospital bills for Xiaoyi’s emergency treatment have already surpassed 100,000 yuan, with roughly 60,000 yuan remaining unpaid.

An emergency online crowdfunding campaign launched by her relatives has raised approximately 90,000 yuan to date. Nevertheless, the family remains deeply concerned about covering the extensive long-term medical care, surgical needs, and physical rehabilitation required for her recovery.

Following her admission to hospital, Xiaoyi’s family strictly barred her boyfriend from visiting, fearing his presence would worsen her fragile emotional state. Despite the ban, he repeatedly attempted to gain entry to her room, prompting medical staff to call local law enforcement, who subsequently escorted him off the premises.

Reflecting on the near-fatal incident, Mr Li observed that his niece was extraordinarily fortunate. Had her body landed just a few feet away on the hard concrete pavement surrounding the garden bed, the impact would have proved instantly fatal.
