Pakistan Face Must-Win Clash Against India in Champions Trophy Showdown

DUBAI, Feb 21, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Pakistan and India are set to renew their fierce cricket rivalry in a high-stakes Champions Trophy clash on Sunday at the Dubai International Stadium, where a packed 25,000-strong crowd and millions of television viewers worldwide will watch the drama unfold.

For Pakistan, the match is a do-or-die encounter, as another defeat would all but end their title defense in the eight-nation tournament. Political tensions between the two nations have limited their meetings to multi-nation events, with this fixture being staged in Dubai after India refused to travel to Pakistan, the tournament’s official host.

Pakistan Under Pressure After Opening Loss

Pakistan, led by Mohammad Rizwan, suffered a 60-run defeat to New Zealand in their opening match in Karachi and now must beat tournament favorites India to stay in contention for the semi-finals.

Currently, New Zealand tops Group A, ahead of India, who defeated Bangladesh by six wickets on Thursday. Pakistan, sitting at the bottom, need a turnaround to keep their campaign alive.

“If we want to be among the great teams of the world, we need to bring consistency,” said batsman Salman Ali Agha. “We can’t afford to play well in one game and poorly in the next.”

Pakistan recently showcased their batting prowess by chasing down a record 353 against South Africa in a home tri-nation series but then faltered in the final against New Zealand, managing just 242 all out.

Adding to their woes, key batter Fakhar Zaman has been ruled out of the tournament due to a muscle injury. Imam-ul-Haq has been drafted in as his replacement.

Pakistan famously defeated India in the 2017 Champions Trophy final, but since then, India has dominated their ODI encounters, winning five of the last six matches, with one being abandoned due to rain. Their last meeting in the 2023 World Cup saw India cruise to a seven-wicket victory in Ahmedabad.

Confident India Eyeing Semi-Final Spot

Meanwhile, India will be brimming with confidence after a clinical win over Bangladesh.

Shubman Gill, in red-hot form, scored an unbeaten 101, registering his second consecutive ODI century, while veteran pacer Mohammed Shami led the bowling attack with figures of 5-53.

A victory against Pakistan would all but secure India’s place in the semi-finals.

“After winning, there’s no need to overthink,” Shami said confidently when asked about the Pakistan clash. “The key is to maintain the same mindset and keep the momentum going.”

Pacer Harshit Rana, who took three wickets against Bangladesh, echoed the same confidence.

“It’s always great to perform ahead of a big match like Pakistan. Hopefully, I can carry this momentum forward,” Rana said. “But for us, the Pakistan match is just another game.”

A Rivalry Beyond Cricket

The cricketing clash carries historical significance, as India and Pakistan—nuclear-armed neighbors—have fought three wars since their partition in 1947. Their on-field encounters often mirror the intensity of their political relationship.

The two nations haven’t played a bilateral series in over a decade, with India last touring Pakistan in 2008 for the Asia Cup. With relations strained, their encounters in global tournaments remain the only stage for this legendary rivalry to unfold.

As Sunday’s match approaches, all eyes will be on Dubai to witness another thrilling chapter in one of cricket’s most storied rivalries.
