Truck collision kills bus driver and passenger in Sirajganj

Two people, including a passenger bus driver, were killed and at least eight others injured after a goods-laden truck struck a passenger bus on the Jamuna Bridge West Link Road in Sirajganj.

The accident occurred at around 1.30am on Saturday, 8 August, beneath the Nalকা Overpass on the highway. Police said the identities of the deceased and injured passengers had not immediately been established.

According to Sub-Inspector Ranjan Debnath of the Jamuna Bridge West Police Station, the passenger bus was travelling from Dinajpur towards Chattogram when it reached the area beneath the Nalকা Overpass. At the same time, a goods truck approaching from Sirajganj town was attempting to climb onto the overpass. The truck struck the bus, causing substantial damage and leaving several people inside the vehicle injured.

The force of the collision proved fatal for two people, including the bus driver, who died at the scene. At least eight other passengers sustained injuries in the crash. The condition of the injured passengers was not immediately disclosed.

Police and Fire Service personnel rushed to the scene after receiving information about the accident. They rescued the injured passengers from the damaged bus and took them to hospital for medical treatment. The bodies of the deceased were recovered and sent to Sirajganj Medical College Hospital for further procedures.

Authorities were also working to establish the identities of those killed and injured. As the crash occurred during the early hours of the morning, the circumstances surrounding the collision were being examined by the police.

The Jamuna Bridge West Link Road is an important transport corridor connecting northern and western parts of Bangladesh with routes towards the central and eastern regions. A large number of passenger buses and freight vehicles use the road, particularly during overnight journeys. Such mixed traffic, combined with vehicles negotiating approaches to overpasses and other highway structures, can create serious risks when speed, visibility or lane positioning becomes a factor.

Police said further details about the accident would be available after the identities of the victims were confirmed and the circumstances of the crash were examined more closely.
