Two student leaders belonging to the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) have been apprehended with contraband yaba tablets in Nalitabari upazila under Sherpur district. Local residents detained the duo in the early hours of Saturday, administered mob justice, and subsequently handed them over to law enforcement authorities.
The detainees have been identified as Delowar Hossain, 22, president of the Boruajani Shahid Muktijoddha College unit of JCD, and Sadeq Ali, 23, the unit’s organisational secretary. Delowar is the son of Kamal Hossain from Sohagpur village, while Sadeq is the son of Aminul Islam, hailing from Kakorkandi village within the same upazila.
According to local accounts, the incident unfolded at around 3:00 am at the Handle Intersection in the Bishgiripara area of Nalitabari. Residents grew suspicious of the two youths, who were allegedly moving through the area under the cover of night to traffic illegal narcotics. Acting on these suspicions, a group of villagers intercepted the pair and searched them, discovering 14 pieces of yaba—a potent combination of methamphetamine and caffeine—in their possession.
Following the discovery, the situation escalated rapidly. Infuriated by the alleged involvement of local political figures in drug distribution, the mob confined both Delowar and Sadeq inside a nearby structure. The crowd then subjected them to a severe physical assault using sticks before contacting the local police station.
Upon receiving the report, an operational team from Nalitabari Police Station arrived at the scene. The villagers formally handed over the two injured suspects along with the seized narcotics to the police officers.
Ashrafuzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nalitabari Police Station, confirmed the incident and stated that both individuals were taken into custody and given necessary medical attention. Police have officially recorded a case against the two under the relevant sections of the Narcotics Control Act. The accused have since been presented before a local court to undergo legal proceedings.
The incident has sparked widespread concern among residents regarding the proliferation of illicit drugs in rural communities. Local community members reiterated their resolve to maintain vigilance against drug peddling to safeguard young people from addiction, while authorities assured that anti-narcotics drives in the region would be intensified.
