In Remembrance of the Forgotten Lyricist Shivdas Bandyopadhyay

In the history of Bengali music, certain names fade with the passage of time, yet their creations endure in people’s hearts. Generations sing and listen to their songs, moved to tears and inspired across eras—even as the creator’s name slips into the shadows of oblivion.

Shivdas Bandyopadhyay is one such forgotten yet exceptionally gifted Bengali poet and timeless lyricist.

During the second half of the twentieth century, when evocative lyrics enriched Bengali cinema and modern music, Shivdas Bandyopadhyay stood as a key figure. His lyrics taught people how to love, gave voice to protest, spoke of humanity, and captured the profound, spiritual bond between rivers, land, and human existence.

Early Life and Translocation

Born on 27 December 1932 in the city of Khulna, his father, Sachigopal Bandyopadhyay, was a police officer. His mother, Radharani Devi, was a courageous woman actively involved in the Swadeshi anti-colonial movement.

His education began at a local school in Khulna. However, the Partition of Bengal in 1947 drastically altered his life’s trajectory. Amidst the horrors of communal violence, he and his family were forced to leave behind their home and possessions, arriving in Kolkata as refugees.

He found shelter in South Kolkata at the home of his elder sister, Shivani Chattopadhyay, an essayist and photographer. Undeterred by adversity, he completed his graduation from Asutosh College and subsequently took up a modest teaching post at Khanpur School.

The Musical Journey Begins

Deep within him, thoughts were quietly transforming into melody.

Encouraged by his sister, he embarked on his literary pursuits. His writings began appearing in prominent publications such as the Sunday literary pullout of Anandabazar Patrika, Desh, and Basumati. The political and social upheavals from the 1940s through the 1960s deeply influenced his mindset and creative output.

Inspired by the renowned composer and singer Aparesh Lahiri, he started writing songs for the political cultural troupe Kranti Shilpi Sangha, where his reputation as a lyricist first took root.

Later, at a literary gathering, he met the poet and filmmaker Premendra Mitra. With Mitra’s assistance, he secured a spot as an enlisted lyricist for All India Radio (Akashvani), marking the start of an illustrious journey in Bengali music.

Each song serves as a historic document of its era and a profound expression of human emotion. In particular, “Manush Manusher Jonno” (“Humans for Humanity”) stands as an immortal musical anthem for empathy and human dignity.

Driven by deep solidarity with Bangladesh’s Liberation Movement, Shivdas Bandyopadhyay penned the historic anthem “Ganga Amar Ma, Padma Amar Ma” (“Ganga is My Mother, Padma is My Mother”). Performed by Bhupen Hazarika, the song merged the two iconic rivers into a single stream of maternal affection, holding a sacred place in the hearts of people on both sides of Bengal.

Deprivation and Financial Struggles

Behind his artistic triumphs lay a painful narrative of neglect.

It remains a long-standing grievance that Shivdas Bandyopadhyay never received the official recognition or honor he deserved. While his songs achieved monumental popularity, the creator himself remained hidden in the background. Even during the subsequent Assamese adaptation of “Ganga Amar Ma, Padma Amar Ma”, he was not given proper attribution as the original lyricist—a bitter truth documented in his life’s history.

The final chapter of his life was marked by hardship. In his declining years, the legendary lyricist had to battle severe poverty and financial distress. The man whose pen enriched the cultural landscape of Bengali music spent his last days scarred by deprivation.

On 8 August 2009, this extraordinary lyricist quietly passed away.

Immortal Creations

An artist may pass away, but their creations live on.

Whenever lines like “Manush manusher jonno, jibon jiboner jonno…” echo through the air, Shivdas Bandyopadhyay’s words remind us that no identity surpasses humanity and no faith is greater than human compassion.

Though his name may have faded from public memory, his songs remain immortal.

To honor his legacy, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation installed a bust of the lyricist in Ward No. 112, inaugurated by his nephew, former West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee. While a monument cannot fully erase decades of neglect, it stands as a humble tribute to his contributions.

Shivdas Bandyopadhyay woven stories of people, land, rivers, love, protest, and humanity into the fabric of his lyrics. His name may be forgotten by many, but his art remains eternal.
