Eight-Year-Old Boy Dies After Family Sustains Severe Burns in Narayanganj

DHAKA — An eight-year-old boy has passed away at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, a day after a catastrophic domestic fire triggered by a gas leak severely injured three members of the same family in Narayanganj.

The deceased child, identified as Maruf, succumbed to his injuries around 12:00 pm on Saturday while receiving intensive treatment in the hospital’s emergency ward. Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, a resident physician at the institute, confirmed the death.

Ignition and Subsequent Rescue

The tragic incident occurred at approximately 7:30 am on Friday inside a tin-roofed dwelling located in the Kuripara Chapatali area of Bandar upazila, Narayanganj. According to accounts provided by family members and neighbours, a dangerous accumulation of gas had built up overnight inside the closed house due to a leak in the supply line or burner valve.

When an adult member of the household struck a match to light a cigarette, the ambient gas ignited instantly, causing a sudden flash fire that engulfed the small living quarters before any of the occupants could escape.

Maruf, along with his 24-year-old father Maidul and his 24-year-old mother Beauty, sustained horrific burn injuries across their bodies. Hearing screams and noticing smoke billowing from the residence, local residents rushed to the scene to extinguish the flames and extract the trapped family members.

All three victims were swiftly transported to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for emergency medical intervention.

Critical Prognosis for Surviving Parents

Medical assessments conducted upon admission revealed the extreme severity of the burns suffered by the family. Attending physicians reported that young Maruf had sustained deep burns covering 90 per cent of his total body surface area, making survival unlikely despite specialized care.

The boy’s parents remain in critical condition within the high-dependency unit, battling life-threatening thermal trauma:

• Maidul (24, Father): Sustained deep burns covering 85 per cent of his body.

• Beauty (24, Mother): Sustained extensive burns covering 80 per cent of her body.

Doctors monitoring the surviving couple confirmed that both parents remain in an extremely precariously balanced condition, with compromised airways and a high risk of systemic complications.

Unregulated gas line connections, poorly maintained cylinders, and compromised rubber hoses remain major public safety hazards across industrial and residential hubs like Narayanganj. Leaks inside poorly ventilated tin-roofed or densely built structures frequently cause gas to pool undetected overnight, turning routine domestic acts into fatal explosions.
