Eighteen-year-old Ramdayal Sarkar spent Saturday evening preparing for his upcoming Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) practical examination. A science student at Summit School and College in Sherpur, he was scheduled to sit his Information and Communication Technology (ICT) practical test on Sunday morning. However, an urgent phone call from his father altered his plans, leading to a tragic sequence of events that claimed both their lives.
Instead of sitting his exam, Ramdayal’s body was returned to his family home alongside that of his father, Tapas Kumar Sarkar, aged 43. The fatal collision occurred on Sunday morning in the Chilimpur area of Bogura.
Tapas Kumar operated a transport business and drove one of the two lorries he owned. On Saturday night, his vehicle suffered a mechanical breakdown in Chilimpur. He contacted his son, who travelled to Bogura carrying 30,000 taka from home to cover the repair expenses. Whilst attending to the stationary lorry, another vehicle crashed into it from behind, killing father, son, and a third individual at the scene.
The sudden loss of the father and son has plunged the Ramchandrapur neighbourhood in Sherpur municipality into deep mourning. Neighbours and relatives gathered at the family home to offer support to Ramdayal’s mother, Dipali Rani Sarkar, 35, who repeatedly lost consciousness from grief after losing her husband and only child.
The tragic incident has also devastated Ramdayal’s 80-year-old grandfather, Ananda Mohan Sarkar. The family had relocated from their ancestral village in Mordia, Raiganj, within the Sirajganj district, 15 years ago specifically to provide Ramdayal with better educational opportunities. Relative Sagar Kumar Roy confirmed that the bodies would be transported to their native village in Raiganj for final rites once all necessary legal procedures were concluded by the police.
