A court in Tangail has sentenced a man to death for the brutal murder of his wife following domestic disputes. Senior District and Sessions Judge Hafizur Rahman delivered the verdict on Sunday afternoon, handing down the capital punishment alongside a financial penalty.
The convict, 37-year-old Shahinur Rahman, son of Samad Miah from Basail Upazila, married Swapna approximately 15 years ago. According to case records, the couple experienced persistent domestic friction and frequent arguments throughout their marriage.
The fatal incident occurred during the early hours of 5 October 2019, when an argument escalated between the couple. In a fit of rage, Shahinur physically assaulted Swapna, inflicting severe injuries across multiple parts of her body before fleeing the premises. Local residents discovered the critically injured woman and rushed her to Tangail General Hospital, where attending medical officers pronounced her dead on arrival.
Following the tragic event, the victim’s father, Mannan Miah, lodged a murder case against Shahinur at Basail Police Station. Law enforcement subsequently conducted an investigation and formally submitted charge sheets to the court.
During the trial proceedings, the prosecution presented testimonies from 13 witnesses, alongside medical and forensic evidence detailing the extent of the physical violence inflicted upon the victim. Upon concluding the cross-examination and assessing the evidence, Judge Hafizur Rahman found the defendant guilty of murder beyond reasonable doubt.
In addition to the death sentence, the tribunal imposed a fine of 100,000 taka on the convict. Tangail Court Inspector Azharul Islam confirmed the judgment, stating that Shahinur was present in the dock when the sentence was read out. Following the delivery of the verdict, police personnel escorted the convict to Tangail District Jail to await the legal execution of his sentence.
