River police officers in Munshiganj have recovered two unidentified, heavily decomposed bodies from the Meghna River in the Gozaria upazila. Police forces have initiated an active investigation to establish the identities of the deceased and uncover the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The bodies were spotted floating in the river near Char Ramzanbeg village under the Gozaria union at approximately 2:00 pm on Sunday, 9 July. Local residents raised the alarm after noticing the remains drifting in the water, prompting a swift response from river police personnel.
Officers confirmed that the deceased female is estimated to be around 35 years of age, whilst the male victim is believed to be approximately 45. Due to prolonged immersion in the water, both bodies showed advanced stages of decomposition, making immediate visual identification impossible.
A particularly sinister detail emerged during the recovery operation: the woman’s feet were bound tightly with rope. This discovery sparked widespread concern amongst local villagers, many of whom suspect that the pair were murdered roughly a week prior before being discarded into the river to conceal the crime. Law enforcement officials, however, have urged caution, stating that it remains too early to definitively confirm whether the deaths were the result of a premeditated homicide.
Inspector Sharajit Kumar Ghosh, in-charge of the Gozaria River Police outpost, reported that officers moved quickly upon receiving reports from locals to retrieve the remains from the river. He confirmed the detail regarding the bound feet and noted the severe decomposition of both corpses. Police are currently completing preliminary inquest reports and arranging to transport the bodies to the local hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations. Investigations to establish their identities and determine the exact cause of death remain ongoing.
