Judge Killed After Car Crashes Into Rod-Laden Truck

A young assistant judge was killed after the private car carrying him crashed into the rear of a stationary truck loaded with steel rods in Jamalpur early Monday morning.

The accident occurred on the Jamalpur–Mymensingh highway near Lahirikanda Bazar in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila. The collision left the car driver seriously injured and trapped the judge inside the wreckage.

The deceased was identified as A K M Samiul Haque, 27, an assistant judge at the Jamalpur District and Sessions Judge’s Court. He was the son of A K M Fazlul Haque, a former government secretary from the Satpai area of Netrakona Sadar Upazila.

The injured driver was identified as Md Idris Ali, 46, son of Danesh Hawladar of the Dhanmondi area of Dhaka.

According to local residents and police, Samiul Haque had left his residence in Lalmatia, Dhaka, late on Sunday night and was travelling towards Jamalpur in a private car. When the vehicle reached the Lahirikanda area of the highway in the early hours of Monday, it struck the back of a truck that had been standing on the roadside after apparently becoming disabled.

The impact was severe. Steel rods being carried by the truck pierced through the front section of the private car and entered Samiul Haque’s body. He sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.

The driver, Idris Ali, was also seriously injured in the crash. Local people and police rescued him from the damaged vehicle and took him to Jamalpur General Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment.

Officer-in-Charge of Jamalpur Sadar Police Station Nazmus Sakib said the truck had been standing beside the road after becoming disabled. The private car approached from behind and collided with it in the early morning.

According to the officer, police spoke to the injured driver after the accident. Idris Ali reportedly said he did not initially notice the truck standing by the roadside. Although he saw it shortly afterwards, there was not enough time to bring the car under control, resulting in the collision.

The incident highlights the danger posed by disabled or stationary heavy vehicles on busy highways, particularly during the hours of darkness and reduced visibility. A vehicle carrying exposed steel rods can create an especially serious hazard in a rear-end collision because the rods may penetrate the vehicle behind it, as happened in this case.

Police completed the necessary procedures at the scene. At the request of the deceased judge’s family, his body was handed over to them without a post-mortem examination.

The death of the 27-year-old judge has cast a shadow over the local judicial community. His fatal journey to Jamalpur ended just before he could reach his workplace, while the injured driver remains under treatment at the district hospital.
