A head-on collision between a passenger bus and a pickup truck on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Habiganj has claimed three lives, including that of a local vegetable trader. The fatal accident took place on Monday morning, 10 August, in the Borochor area under Paniunda Union in Nabiganj upazila.
The deceased have been identified as Moshhud Ahammad, 40, son of Sufi Miah from Karkhana village; Moyna Miah, 42, son of Abdul Karim from the Inatganj Bazar area; and Kashem Miah, 50, a resident of Dakshingram Inatganj.
According to local witnesses and police reports, several traders were travelling aboard the pickup truck early in the morning to collect fresh produce from the local Digambar market. As the vehicle reached the Borochor stretch of the highway, a Sylhet-bound passenger coach operated by Lucky Paribahan coming from Dhaka crashed head-on into the oncoming pickup.
The impact threw Moshhud Ahammad onto the highway tarmac, where the oncoming bus crushed him before coming to a halt. He died instantly at the scene. The crash left several other occupants, including the pickup driver, critically injured.
Eyewitnesses and local residents rushed to the spot to rescue the victims, arranging immediate transportation to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for urgent treatment. Despite medical intervention, Moyna Miah and Kashem Miah succumbed to their injuries while undergoing care at the facility later in the day. Two additional individuals remain hospitalised in critical condition.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anisur Rahman of Sherpur Highway Police Station confirmed the casualties and stated that officers secured the crash site shortly after the incident. Both damaged vehicles have been seized and taken into custody at Sherpur Highway Police Station. Authorities are conducting necessary enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the collision, with formal legal proceedings currently underway.
