A fire broke out at a chemical warehouse in the Sanarpar area of Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, causing widespread panic among local residents before firefighters brought the flames under control. The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 pm on Tuesday, 11 August, when thick smoke and flames were spotted surging from inside the storage facility.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire spread rapidly throughout the premises due to the highly flammable nature of the chemicals stored inside. Dense plumes of toxic black smoke engulfed the immediate neighbourhood, prompting nearby residents and shopkeepers to flee the area in fear of a major explosion. Goods, chemical drums, and raw materials stored within the warehouse were reduced to ashes as the blaze swept through the building.
Upon receiving the emergency call, two firefighting units from the Kanchpur Modern Fire Service Station were dispatched immediately to the scene. Firefighters arrived swiftly and launched a coordinated operation to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjacent residential houses and commercial establishments in the densely populated locality. No casualties or injuries were reported, as workers managed to evacuate the building in time.
Abdullah Al Arefin, Deputy Director of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, confirmed that emergency responders managed to bring the situation under control within half an hour of arrival. He noted that the prompt response from the fire crews averted a far greater catastrophe, given the combustible contents of the warehouse.
Authorities have initiated a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the ignition, which remains unclear, as well as to assess the total financial damage caused by the incident. Officials will also inspect whether the facility complied with safety regulations and held proper clearance for storing industrial chemicals in a residential zone.
