For football enthusiasts in Bangladesh, New York Cosmos is historically best remembered as the iconic club where Brazilian legend Pelé played out the final chapters of his glittering career. That perception, however, may soon gain a fresh local connection. Speculation is mounting that Bangladeshi midfielder Shamit Shome could be on the verge of joining the storied American outfit.
Shome spent three seasons with Canadian Premier League side Cavalry FC before parting ways with the club. The Canadian team confirmed his departure ahead of the 2026 season, leaving the midfielder without a contract. Reports now suggest that the Bangladeshi-heritage player may seal a move to New York Cosmos, a club currently competing in the third tier of the United States football pyramid. Neither Shome nor the Cosmos management has officially confirmed the transaction.
New York Cosmos holds a revered status in global football history. During the mid-1970s, the club captured world attention by signing Pelé, who featured for the side between 1975 and 1977. West German World Cup-winning captain Franz Beckenbauer also joined the team during that golden era, elevating the club’s profile across North America and beyond.
Shome’s international career path has been equally notable. Raised in Canada, the versatile midfielder initially represented the Canadian national team in two international friendlies. Having acquired Bangladeshi citizenship last year, he formally pledged his international allegiance to Bangladesh.
His competitive debut for Bangladesh arrived in June 2025 during the third round of the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers. Quickly establishing himself as a key presence in the national team’s engine room, Shome registered his first international goal roughly four months later during a thrilling 4-3 qualifier defeat against Hong Kong.
