Bangladesh Measles Death Toll Rises To 890

Five more people have died with measles-like symptoms in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, taking the combined death toll from confirmed measles and suspected measles cases to 890 since 15 March, according to the latest figures released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Thursday.

The latest surveillance data show that the outbreak continues to place significant pressure on the country’s public health system. Of the 890 reported deaths since 15 March, 791 involved people who died after developing symptoms consistent with measles, while 99 deaths were recorded among patients with laboratory-confirmed measles.

During the latest 24-hour reporting period, 1,025 new patients were identified with either confirmed measles or measles-like symptoms. Of these, 74 were confirmed to have measles, while 951 were reported with suspected measles symptoms.

Since the outbreak period began on 15 March, the number of suspected measles cases recorded nationwide has reached 140,076. Laboratory-confirmed cases stand at 17,543.

The figures highlight the continuing scale of the outbreak, although the DGHS distinguishes between confirmed measles infections and suspected cases because not every patient displaying measles-like symptoms is subsequently confirmed through testing. The distinction is particularly important when assessing the reported death toll, as the majority of deaths in the latest cumulative figures are classified as suspected rather than laboratory-confirmed measles deaths.

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that can spread rapidly among people who lack adequate immunity. Children are particularly vulnerable to severe complications, especially when infection is accompanied by malnutrition or delayed access to medical care. Earlier health assessments during Bangladesh’s 2026 outbreak found that young children accounted for a large proportion of reported cases, while gaps in vaccination coverage contributed to the accumulation of susceptible populations.

The World Health Organisation had also documented a sharp rise in measles transmission earlier in the outbreak. By 20 April, Bangladesh had reported 24,776 suspected cases and 3,617 laboratory-confirmed infections since 15 March, alongside 183 suspected measles-related deaths and 37 confirmed deaths.

The substantial increase in cumulative cases and fatalities since those earlier figures underscores the seriousness and persistence of the outbreak. Health authorities are continuing surveillance of suspected and confirmed infections, while monitoring patients and the spread of the disease across the country.

With more than 140,000 suspected cases now recorded since 15 March, the latest figures reinforce the need for sustained disease surveillance, timely diagnosis and access to appropriate treatment, alongside efforts to close gaps in routine immunisation coverage.

The DGHS’s latest report therefore presents a continuing public-health challenge: while confirmed measles deaths remain a smaller proportion of the overall toll, the number of people dying after developing measles-like symptoms has become a major component of the country’s reported outbreak mortality.
