Two Drug Suspects Arrested With Yaba in Nawabganj

Two alleged drug dealers have been arrested with yaba tablets during a police operation in Nawabganj, Dhaka, according to the Detective Branch (DB) of police.

The suspects were identified as Md Selim, 42, son of Md Nasir of Bahra Charkandi village in Nawabganj, and Md Shanto Islam, 28, son of Saru Hossain of Ramnathpur village in the same upazila.

Police said the arrests were made late on Wednesday night, 12 August, during an operation conducted in areas under the jurisdiction of Nawabganj and Dohar police stations. A team from the Dhaka District Detective Branch (South) carried out the operation at around 10.30pm following instructions from Dhaka District Superintendent of Police Shamima Parveen.

During the operation, officers arrested Selim at Komarganj Bazar in Nawabganj and recovered 30 yaba tablets from his possession. Shanto Islam was also detained and 50 yaba tablets were recovered from him.

The two suspects were subsequently taken into police custody for questioning and legal proceedings. Police said a total of 80 yaba tablets were recovered from the two men.

A case was filed against the suspects at Nawabganj Police Station on Thursday morning, 13 August. Following the filing of the case, they were produced before the court, according to the Dhaka District Detective Branch (South).

Md Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge of the Detective Branch (South), confirmed that the suspects had been sent to court after the case was lodged.

The arrests form part of ongoing law-enforcement efforts to curb the distribution and movement of illicit drugs in areas surrounding Dhaka. Yaba, a tablet containing a combination of methamphetamine and caffeine, has long been a major concern for drug-control authorities in Bangladesh because of its illegal circulation and potential for serious health and social consequences.

Police operations against suspected drug dealers commonly focus on identifying alleged suppliers, distributors and street-level sellers through surveillance and intelligence-based action. Authorities have also continued to stress the importance of disrupting supply networks rather than focusing solely on individual users.

The latest case will now proceed through the legal process. The recovered tablets have been taken as evidence, while the allegations against the two accused will be determined by the court in accordance with the law.
