A woman has been detained by police in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj, after allegedly cutting her husband’s genitals during a domestic dispute over an attempt to have sexual intercourse against her wishes.
The incident took place at around 7.30pm on Wednesday, 12 August, in the South Sanarpar area of Ward 3 under the Narayanganj City Corporation. The injured man, identified as 32-year-old Zahirul Islam, was initially taken to Narayanganj General Hospital, commonly known as Victoria Hospital, before being transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
Police detained his wife, 28-year-old Mosammat Sabikun Nahar Mim, shortly after the incident and took her to Siddhirganj Police Station for questioning.
According to police and local residents, Zahirul returned home on Wednesday evening and allegedly attempted to initiate sexual intercourse with Mim. She reportedly objected and accused him of trying to force himself on her. An argument subsequently broke out between the couple. At one stage, Mim allegedly attacked Zahirul with a sharp weapon, causing serious injury to his genital area.
Hearing his cries for help, neighbours rushed to the residence and found him bleeding heavily. They helped take him to hospital, where doctors provided emergency treatment before arranging his transfer to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Mim has given a different account of the circumstances leading to the incident. She claimed that she and Zahirul had been experiencing marital conflict for a long period and that they had verbally separated on 27 September 2023. She also alleged that despite the separation, Zahirul continued to visit her regularly.
According to Mim, Zahirul married another woman around three months ago but continued visiting her residence. She further alleged that he did not provide her with financial support and would take money from her after receiving his salary.
Mim also claimed that Zahirul had repeatedly attempted to have sexual relations with her against her wishes. She alleged that a similar situation occurred on Wednesday night, during which the argument escalated and she attacked him.
The allegations made by either side have not yet been independently established. Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident, including the couple’s marital history, their claims regarding separation and the events immediately preceding the assault.
Sub-Inspector Abdul Al Mamun, who visited the scene, said the accused woman had been detained and brought to the police station, while the injured man was sent to hospital for treatment.
Siddhirganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Emdadul Haque confirmed the incident and said the woman was detained shortly after it occurred. He added that further legal proceedings were under way.
Police said the investigation would focus on determining the precise cause of the dispute and establishing what happened inside the residence before the injury occurred. The injured man’s medical condition and the statements of those involved will also form part of the investigation.
The case highlights the seriousness of domestic disputes involving allegations of coercion and violence. Any allegation of forced sexual activity requires proper investigation, while claims of assault must likewise be examined through due legal process. No final conclusion about responsibility can be drawn until the investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings are completed.
